From the WDM, Executive and Officers of Maryhill Orange and Purple District 46, we wish you all a happy and glorious 12th July.

While the parades across the world will take place tomorrow, today marks the date in history when King William III secured our civil and religious liberties at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

Whether you're celebrating in your own way today or taking part in wider celebrations tomorrow, we hope you have an enjoyable and safe time.

🟠 Boyne Celebrations 2026 🟠

As the banners are furled after another Glasgow Boyne Celebration, the District Executive would like to take this opportunity to place on record their sincere thanks to all who made this year's Boyne celebrations such a special occasion.

The Boyne Celebrations are more than a day out. We gather to celebrate the Boyne, 1690 - the battle that secured civil and religious liberty across our great Nation, freedom of conscience, and the right to worship in the Reformed Protestant faith without fear. Freedoms that still stand today, three centuries on. And this year, despite the weather, we celebrated in style, a great day, a great night, and a memorable big walk all round.

Our heartfelt thanks go to the Ballyclare Memorial Flute Band , who accompanied us on parade with skill, pride and distinction. You did us proud, and we can't wait to welcome you back across the water next yearπŸ₯

To our own members, thank you for turning out in such numbers and representing the District with the dignity it deserves. Days like these belong to you, and it was great to see such a large turnout.

Thanks also to The Prodclaimers for a brilliant night of evening entertainment that had the hall on its feet, and to the bar staff at Sandbank Social Club, who looked after us all superbly from first pour to last orders 🍻

A special word of appreciation to Police Scotland for their professionalism in getting us around the city safely and without incident.

When we parade, we don't simply mark a date in history. We give thanks for a heritage of faith, and we recommit ourselves to passing it on.

"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free." - Galatians 5:1

For any of our Brothers or Sisters taking part in the 12th July Celebrations in the weekend ahead, we hope you all have an enjoyable and safe time πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

🎩 HATS OFF TO THOMAS & WILLIAM
The bowler hat is a familiar sight at Orange parades, particularly on the Twelfth in Northern Ireland, but have you ever wondered where it came from?

First created in 1849 by London hat makers Thomas and William Bowler, the hat was designed to protect gamekeepers from low-hanging branches and stay firmly on the wearer's head. More than 175 years later, it remains one of the most recognisable items associated with Orange culture.

From Victorian Britain and the American Wild West to the streets of Belfast each 12th July, the bowler hat has a remarkable history.

Read more in this week's article as we look at the origins of an enduring parade tradition. πŸ‘‡
