Greta Williamson
4th March 1941-3rd May 2026
We have been asked to announce and share the news, that on Sunday 3rd May 2026, Greta died peacefully in the care of Bowgreave Rise Residential home, aged 85.
Born and raised in Ulverston, when it was still part of Lancashire, Greta devoted her life to the care, encouragement and education of others. She trained as a teacher at Elizabeth Gaskell College in Manchester, qualifying in Home Economics, English and Religious Education and later furthered her studies by gaining a BA (Hons) degree from Lancaster University.
Greta was deeply committed to the development and wellbeing of young people, particularly those who had been overlooked or sidelined for whatever reason. Throughout her teaching career she was known for her kindness, patience and unwavering encouragement. Even in retirement, her dedication to helping others continued as she supported and taught young people with dyslexia, offering confidence as well as learning.
She loved living in Garstang and often said that retirement there felt like “being on holiday every day.” A familiar and much-loved figure in the town’s coffee shops, Greta could often be found with a book in hand, always ready for a conversation and a friendly smile. Rarely seen without one of her distinctive hats, she became affectionately known by many as “the lady in the hat.”
Faith and community were central to Greta’s life. She was a devoted and active member of her local church throughout her life, living with generosity, compassion and quiet strength. She gave freely of her time, encouragement and love, touching the lives of countless people along the way.
Greta will be remembered as a very special person whose warmth, kindness and care for others left a lasting mark on all who knew her.
Greta will be received into St. Luke’s Church, Winmarleigh on the evening of Wednesday 20th May at 5.30pm. Her funeral will take place the following day, Thursday 21st May at 11.00am. Greta will be laid to rest with her late parents at Ulverston Cemetery on Friday 22nd May at 2.30pm.
Family flowers only please. Should you wish to make a charitable donation in memory of Greta, it would be gratefully accepted to benefit ‘Church Mission Society’ and St. Luke’s Church care of the funeral director.
