A New Space for Calm and Connection Opens at Colwell Baptist Church
A new community initiative, The Quiet Corner, has launched at Colwell Baptist Church, offering a peaceful and welcoming space for unpaid carers, those who have been bereaved, and anyone experiencing isolation.
The Quiet Corner is open and available at all times for those who would like a place for quiet reflection or rest. In addition, volunteers are on hand every Friday from 10:30am to 12:00pm, offering a warm welcome, hot drinks, and the opportunity for gentle conversation and connection.
The space provides a flexible environment where visitors can take time for themselves in a way that suits their needs. Whether it’s sitting quietly in reflection, enjoying a hot drink and conversation, getting involved in creative activities, or spending time tending and growing in the gardens, The Quiet Corner is designed to support wellbeing and community.
The project is volunteer-led and shaped by the people who use it, with opportunities for individuals to not only access support but also to contribute ideas or even develop their own activities and groups over time.
Janet Grimwood, lead volunteer, said:
"We all sometimes need space for ourselves and don’t find the time to prioritise calm and quiet for our own wellbeing. Having had caring responsibilities in my life, I know how important a space like this can be — just to be, or to get involved in creative things with others, offering a bit of respite from the challenges of everyday life."
Joy Wiltshire, co-lead volunteer, added:
"I’m really looking forward to sharing time with others who may wish to get involved in developing the garden area — creating a space that offers peace, tranquillity and sensory experiences, somewhere people can come to escape, relax and feel at ease."
The Quiet Corner aims to be a gentle, inclusive space where people can feel supported, whether they come for companionship, creativity, or simply a moment of stillness. Adam, our Community Connector for West Wight will be on hand every fortnight to offer additional help, advice and support to anyone attending.
Local professionals and community members are encouraged to share information about the space with anyone who may benefit.
