Bible Thoughts
King Solomon was renowned for his wisdom. The LORD God of Israel named Solomon as the His anointed successor to King David.
God appears to Solomon in a dream and says, “Ask! What shall I give you?”
Solomon humbly acknowledges his youth and inexperience; he calls himself “a little child” and ignorant of all that is involved in being a king. He says, “…give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”
The LORD commended Solomon for asking for the wisdom to rule His people with justice, rather than riches or long life or vengeance over his enemies. The result was that God gave him what he asked for together with the wealth and success into the bargain.
I have asked myself, if God posed the same question to me, what would I ask for? Wisdom made Solomon very famous and learned but it didn’t stop him from falling into a spiritual trap, in the shape of his huge number of wives, who led him into idolatry. So, it would seem that wisdom on its own did not save Solomon from temptation and spiritual shipwreck.
I believe the answer lies in Isaiah 11:2,3, which prophecies about the coming Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. These verses lay out the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit to the Messiah,
“The Spirit of the LORD shall rest on Him,
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD,
His delight is in the fear of the LORD…”
This passage stresses ‘the fear of the LORD’. That is what I would ask for.
