This weekend’s lectionary passage takes us to the Gospel of Matthew, where the Pharisees famously test Jesus with a question concerning the law (Matt 22:34-40), which Jesus answers, and then follows up with a question of his own, in the form of a riddle (vv.41-46).

As we prepare to partake of the Lord’s Supper this Sunday, we arrive, in our lectionary wonderings through the book of Exodus, to the 20th chapter, and to the giving of the ten commandments, the words of the covenant (Ex 20:1–4, 7–9, 12–20).
