DISCIPLINE AND VALUES IN A CIVILIZED WORLD BY PROPHET OLANIYI ADETIFA
(Proverbs 22:6; Hebrews 12:11; Ephesians 6:4)
Introduction
We live in a world that calls itself modern, advanced, and civilized — yet, in the process of embracing this so-called civilization, many of the timeless virtues that shaped strong individuals and godly families are being eroded. The values of discipline, respect, and courtesy are gradually being replaced with indulgence, entitlement, and rebellion.
While technology and modern education have expanded knowledge, the foundation of character and moral upbringing seems to be crumbling. We must, therefore, return to the biblical principles that build strong homes and balanced children.
1. Civilization Is Not a Substitute for Character
Being modern does not mean abandoning manners or moral standards. Civilization without discipline is chaos dressed in sophistication. True growth happens when advancement is matched with virtue.
“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” — Proverbs 14:34
Children today often see correction as punishment and structure as oppression. Yet, the foundation of greatness is training, patience, and endurance. Every successful person went through a process — a refining fire that shaped their strength and humility.
2. The Role of Parents in Building Values
Parents are the first teachers, mentors, and examples a child encounters. Unfortunately, in many cases, parents are not helping the situation. Out of love or guilt, some overpamper their children, providing everything they ask for but failing to instill boundaries, values, and responsibility.
“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22:6
Raising a child goes beyond feeding and clothing. It means building resilience, teaching respect, encouraging hard work, and nurturing spiritual discipline. A child who is never told “no” will struggle to handle life’s “no.”
3. Discipline Is a Gift, Not a Punishment
“Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” — Hebrews 12:11
Discipline may seem hard, but it builds the strength to endure challenges. A child corrected in love becomes an adult guided by wisdom. Without discipline, freedom becomes destructive — like a car without brakes.
Children who are never disciplined grow up thinking life is always easy. They become easily frustrated by hardship and lack the persistence to overcome trials. But those who are trained and guided become pillars of stability in society.
4. The Duty of the Church and Community
The church must continue to emphasize the importance of moral and spiritual formation. Sunday schools, youth fellowships, and mentorship programs should be more than social gatherings — they should be training grounds for leadership, godliness, and respect.
“Fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” — Ephesians 6:4
It takes a community of faith — pastors, parents, and mentors — to shape disciplined and value-driven children who will become tomorrow’s leaders.
5. Returning to the Old Path of Wisdom
There’s nothing old-fashioned about respect, humility, and obedience. These are the pillars that sustain families and nations. We must not allow civilization to erase what makes us human and godly.
“Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.” — Jeremiah 6:16
Let every home become a place of training, where love is balanced with discipline, and freedom is guided by responsibility.
Conclusion
Modernity should refine us, not ruin us. True civilization is when wisdom, discipline, and love coexist in balance. As believers, we must raise our children not just to succeed in the world, but to stand strong in character and faith.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” — Proverbs 9:10
Let us build homes and communities where godly values are celebrated, discipline is embraced, and courtesy is restored.
