The Parish of St Thomas, Exeter

The Parish of St Thomas, Exeter We're an Anglican church in the liberal Catholic Tradition on the west of the river Exe in Exeter. You're very welcome to join us.

Our mission is to be a community that's welcoming, outward-looking and outward-reaching, rooted in prayer and worship. The church is usually open for private prayer 10.00am - 3pm Monday to Friday. We hold services in the church on Sundays from Palm Sunday to mid November. NB In winter, the regular Sunday services are held in the (much warmer) church hall. Our Christmas services are held back in the church building. Please see notices and FB posts for further details.

With the thermometer rising rapidly this Bank Holiday weekend, the Church is celebrating the feast of Pentecost. At Pentecost, we remember the story of the sending of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles, which appeared as flames of fire around them and on their heads.

A while after rising from dead, Jesus told his friends that he had to return to the Father. However, his promise was that they would not be left alone but would receive the Spirit to inspire and empower their work. As creatures, we all have God's spark in us—but those who want to follow Jesus today inherit his promise of the help and inspiration of the same Spirit that appeared as fire around the first Jesus-followers.

Everyone is welcome to join us this Sunday (23rd) at 10:30AM at St Thomas to learn more about the Holy Spirit and to celebrate Pentecost.

The Archdeacon of Exeter led our service at St Thomas this morning, and we were so delighted that as part of his visit he was able to announce publicly that the Rev'd Hannah Alderson has been appointed as our new Rector.

Hannah has served for the last 10 years first as St Luke's Chaplain and then Lazenby Chaplain at the University of Exeter. We are looking forward to welcoming her and her family to St Thomas towards the end of the summer, and are so excited about this new chapter in the life of our church and our work in this community.

It was a sad day today at St Thomas, as we said goodbye to the Rev'd Sarah Mounoury.

Following the retirement of our previous rector last autumn, Sarah agreed to come and be our interim vicar, leading us for a fixed period through Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter, as we went through the process of advertising for and appointing a new leader.

Those sorts of short-term roles can be difficult to navigate, but Sarah threw herself into the life of our church and the community of St Thomas from day 1, and she has led and served us with huge enthusiasm, compassion, grace, determination, and patience. We are so grateful to Sarah for everything she has done.

It has been a wonderful privilege to get to know her and her lovely family—they will all be missed. All of us at St Thomas wish her the very best for the future, knowing that in her ministry going forward she will bless many, many others as she has blessed us.

As usual, representatives of St Thomas Church will be joining with other Christians tomorrow to march in Exeter Pride.

We are proud to support our LGTBQ+ members and neighbours, and we pray and work for an end to discrimination and full inclusion in the Church and throughout society.

Exeter Pride is back and bigger than ever this year, taking place on Saturday 9 May.

Now in its 18th year, this annual celebration of le***an, gay, bisexual, trans and q***r communities is the biggest free pride event in the South West.

The traditional march, which has had its route doubled this year, will be starting at midday, setting off from St Sidwell’s Community Café before making its way to Northernhay Gardens where there will be a range of things to get involved in, including live performances, music, food vendors and a drinks bar.

Rougemont Gardens will also be a hub for arts and crafts, workshops, and entertainment for the whole family, as well as the return of the much-loved Exeter Pride Dog Show.

After suffering some wind damage, our community-made Easter banners are now back up. Thanks again to everyone who helped to make them, and to Liz and Ian for their work modifying and reattaching them.

In the Church calendar, Easter lasts for 7 weeks—so there is still plenty of time to enjoy them.

We'd love you to join us in celebrating Easter this morning at St Thomas Parish Church! Happy Easter!
