Big Special - Postindustrial Hometown Blues (2024): I'm big on this
kind of raw hip-hop/modern punk hybrid sound. The strong Midlands accent coming through much of Joe Hicklin's vocals reminds me of home and gives the album a sense of gritty realness. introspective, smart, often dark and always witty.
Moron Police - Pachinko (2025): The release of Pachinko was delayed due to the death of their drummer and friend Thore Pettersen, which obviously had a huge impact and it's very clear in
some of the lyrics, despite their upbeat, off-the-wall sound.
It's like the music from Sonic Adventure, gone prog.
Poe - Haunted (2000): rediscovered when replaying Alan Wake
in anticipation of the second game. I looked into the soundtrack artists to discover that the album was written as a companion piece to House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, and that Poe is his sister. A strange blend of pop, trip-hop (a'la Portishead) and experimental music. The listening experience is much improved as a fan of the book.
Dishonourable mentions: Conjurer "Unself", Primitive Man "Observance" Blood Incantation "Absolute Elsewhere"

Sulfuric Cautery - Consummate Extirpation (2025)
Every SC album has a different snare sound - this time it sounds
like someone flicking a metal saucepan. Gotta respect a good snare
ping.
Sligm - Untethered Dimensions EP (2025)
Riffy death grind with the vocalist from Fluids. Need I say more?
Kanonenfieber - Die Urkatastrophe (2024)
Despite not playing anything extremely technical, Hans has quickly
become one of my favourite active drummers. Noise's songwriting is excellent.
Dishonourable mentions:
Aesop Rock (either of the two albums he's released this year). Early Xysma from when they were grindcore.

Sagart Alghague - Skazy Podzemnoj Vody
Artsy, lofi, atmospheric, music sort of like a witchy Jandek, but
more musical. Lyrics are written in some made-up language.
Microtonal (or just out of tune?) kithara. Simple but effective.
Pfarre - Spolia
Dancy electronic dungeon-synth whatever. Saw them at life after death, best thing that evening, though that may just be because I had a skull crushing migraine which ruined my enjoyment of everything afterwards.
Potentia Potestas - Lobo
industrial/electronic/noise, it's very simple really, there's not
much I can say that isn't already contained in those
genre descriptions, I just happened to listen to it a lot,
especially the second track, "Asalto".
Dishonourable mentions:
Morktar Plagued by this Hagridden Life, Gjendod two most recent albums, old Grifteskymfning.
