Sunday School returned over the weekend, after the summer break, with the first in a two-parter on forgiveness.

When we shared what we'd been doing during the notices, the rest of the congregation found the content helpful, so I thought it was worth a share here.

The session centred on looking at the steps we can take to seek forgiveness from others, and the steps needed to look after ourselves when someone doesn't/won't/can't apologise for hurting us. We created some artwork on these steps to take home and use.

The four 'A' steps for forgiveness are - be AWARE of it (what we have done wrong), ADMIT it to ourselves (not always easy to do!), APOLOGISE for it (directly to the person we have upset) and ACT on it (take measures to ensure we don't make the same mistake again).

The four 'N' steps to look after ourselves are - NOTICE the feeling (have awareness that we are upset about it), NAME it (put words to the feelings we have eg sadness, anger, disappointment), be NICE to it (gently extend care to the feelings inside, rather than pushing them down or dismissing them) and ask, what's NEXT? (think of ways to process the feelings we have by talking to a friend or adult, and offer up our experience to God).

It's always wonderful to know that what we're doing in Sunday School also resonates with others :-)

For part two this coming Sunday, we'll be looking at God's forgiveness.

Our Patron, Wadham College, is delighted to announce that Rev Joanna Winn-Smith (currently the Bishop’s Chaplain for the diocese) has been appointed as the new Rector at Esher. She will be bringing a huge amount of skills and experience to the parish and we're so looking forward to welcoming her.

Jo said, ’I am so excited to be coming to Esher to journey with you all in learning and sharing more of the love of Christ. I’m looking forward to worshipping in word, music and sacrament, building community, supporting one another and serving our parish. I’ve been a lay reader and youth group leader, worked for the national church, taught theology and ministry, been a counsellor and supported the bishop as his chaplain – time to put all those skills together and become a parish priest! Thank you for inviting me to join you.’

Please pray for Jo and her family as they prepare to move.On behalf of the PCC, we want to thank everyone who has supported this process with your prayers, encouragement and patience.

This has truly been a parish journey, and we are deeply grateful for the care, commitment and faith shown by so many over recent months.

We very much look forward to Jo's Institution and Induction on Wednesday 30 September at 7.30pm at Christ Church. Find out more about Jo at https://www.cofeguildford.org.uk/bishops-chaplain/
