It’s that time of year again when mini eggs are lining the supermarket shelves. But, did you know that, just like grapes, they are the perfect size to block a small child’s airway and choke them? And, their hard shell can make it difficult to dislodge with standard first aid techniques.

With whole grapes we advise cutting them in half lengthways and ideally into quarters to create thin strips. But chopping up mini eggs isn’t as easy. So, what can you do?

1. Hide them from the children and eat them yourself – good luck with that!

2. Break them into small pieces with a rolling pin. Or, crush them in a pestle and mortar. Or melt them a little first.

3. Opt for a different treat. Larger, hollow eggs are much safer for little ones.

AN IMPORTANT POINT

AN IMPORTANT POINT

The decluttering trend encourages us to decant our cleaning products into jars and other prettier dispensers. But this can put your child at risk.

Here’s why:

1. Chemicals in cleaning products can cause serious harm. Including life-changing chemical burns to eyes, skin and throats.

2. Cleaning products come in child-resistant packaging for a reason – to slow children down and reduce the chance of accidents.

3. The original bottles have essential information about first aid, chemical ingredients and proper handling. If an accident should happen, you’ll need this to hand.

4. Out of their original container, cleaning products are easier to mistake for a drink or sweets. So, the risk of a child swallowing them is much higher.

So, please keep products in their original containers and out of reach of curious little hands.

No Wheels & Squeals this week as it’s half term.
Bring the children to this one morning when you want to get out of the house, whatever the weather. It is open 10.30-12.30 every weekday morning and there are a lot of different things in the church to look at.

Want to escape the grey skies and relentless rain? Feast your eyes on colourful and dramatic artwork at the Christ Church Art Festival running 16th-20th February 10.30am-12.30pm. Free entry, art activities for children and hot drinks served. A lovely way to brighten up a dull half term.

Get prepared to join in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch (Friday 23-Sunday 25 January). This is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey. Last year, nearly 600,000 people took part and over nine million birds were counted. We’ve lost a staggering 38 million birds from UK skies in the last 60 years. With birds facing so many challenges, it’s more important than ever to get involved in the Birdwatch. To take part, spend one hour counting the birds you see in one location – your garden, balcony or a local park. Submit your findings to the RSPB. You can download a free guide and ID chart to help you identify the birds you spot on the RSPB website. Find out more at:

The RSPB (The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) is charity for the conservation of birds & wildlife. We bring people together who love nature and want to take action to restore it
