It’s a question that matters not only for families today, but for generations to come.

Aberdeen has a thriving Catholic community and successful Catholic primary schools – but no Catholic secondary school.

Later this month, families across Aberdeen will have an opportunity to add their voice to the case for Catholic secondary education in our city.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing more about why this matters, the case for a school, and how families can get involved.

I. O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, ask and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.” Behold I knock, I seek and ask for the grace of [insert your intention.]
Our Father...Hail Mary...Glory be to the Father...Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

II. O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, if you ask any thing of the Father in my name, He will give it to you.” Behold, in your name, I ask the Father for the grace of [insert your intention.]

We celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15. It commemorates the profound union of heart that existed between the Mother of the Redeemer and the Savior, through which she experienced many interior sorrows as a consequence of His Mission, but particularly during His Passion and Death.

From the early days of Jesus’ life, Mary suffered through these maternal pains and anxieties. With Simeon’s prophecy, Mary knew that a sword would pierce her own soul. Soon thereafter, the Holy Family was forced to flee to Egypt in order to save Jesus from King Herod (Matthew 2:13–23). Also, the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph suffered the pain of Jesus remaining behind in the Temple for three days. With her Son entering upon His Mission the opposition of so many to Him, as recounted in the Gospels, must have been a tremendous sorrow for her. All of this culminated at the Cross.

The title “Our Lady of Sorrows,” therefore, honors the trials that the Mother of the “Suffering Servant” (Isaiah 52:13–53:12) faced, and, therefore, this feast follows immediately after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

‘Behold, your son! Behold, your mother!’

At that time: Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, recalling the suffering endured by the Blessed Virgin Mary as she shared so closely in the life, Passion and death of her Son.

Devotion to the sorrows of Mary has deep roots in the life of the Church. For a time, two separate feasts honouring the Sorrowful Mother were celebrated, before the observance became established in September, immediately following the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

In the Gospel of Luke, the elderly Simeon tells Mary that a sword will pierce her own soul. That prophecy finds its most powerful fulfilment at Calvary, where Mary remains beside the Cross and witnesses the suffering and death of Jesus.

Saint John tells us that, from the Cross, Jesus entrusted Mary and the beloved disciple to one another: “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple: “Here is your mother.”

Christian tradition has long reflected upon the Seven Sorrows of Mary: the prophecy of Simeon; the flight into Egypt; the loss of the Child Jesus in Jerusalem; meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary; standing at the foot of the Cross; receiving the body of Jesus after his death; and the burial of her Son.

Saint Ambrose reflected upon Mary’s extraordinary courage at Calvary. While others had fled, she remained faithfully beside her Son, looking upon his wounds with a mother’s sorrow while recognising in his sacrifice the salvation of the world.

Our Lady of Sorrows reminds us that Mary understands human grief and suffering. Yet her sorrow is never without hope. Even at the foot of the Cross, she remains faithful to God and united with her Son.

Today, we ask Mary to remain close to all those who are grieving, suffering or carrying heavy burdens, and to lead each of us ever closer to Christ.
