Sometimes heaven seems to be silent and we can confused by the lack of any obvious interventions from above but this song reminds us that our Saviour King often works behind the scenes. There are many “as it so happened” moments in the Bible, from Ruth gleaning in the field of the kindly Boaz to Nehemiah’s providential positioning in the palace as cupbearer to King Artaxerxes I of Persia.

Each of us has peculiar gifts and personal experiences; but the one object God has in view is the maturing of the whole Body of Christ. We must, therefore, bring our spiritual possessions and lay them at the apostles' feet, that we may share all of what God has given to us.

Withhold no part of the precious truth, but speak what you know and declare what you have seen. Do not allow the toil or darkness or possible unbelief of your friends to dissuade you. Let us rise and march to the place of duty, and there declare what great things God has shown to our soul.

Just as manna in the wilderness needed to be gathered daily and could not be stored overnight (or it would spoil), so we need to keep coming back to Christ Jesus for the sustenance our spirits require.

Looking around us at our world, there is so much instability, turmoil and division. Yet God’s word never fails or flounders. The kingdom of heaven where the Servant King Jesus reigns, is unstoppable, confounding the sceptics and refreshing all those who long for a better country.

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.” (2 Corinthians 4:8-10)

How amazing that our wonderful Saviour is “not afraid of messy things! It’s true, you got your hand in everything and everything you do, just proves You’re moving when I can’t see. Right now, the future, and the in between, you’re working behind the scenes.” God is not finished yet and is still working out His purposes. The tiny mustard seed is growing into the largest of plants, providing shelter to all those come under its branches (Matthew 13:31-32).
The kingdom of heaven is unstoppable, confounding the sceptics and refreshing all those who long for a better country.

Rend Collective, in their inimitable style, remind us in this song that “We are the salt and light; we are the beacon burning. We are the fire bright – a city on a hill.”
As followers of Jesus, we need to be shaken out of the shaker and to keep on shining even amidst the darkness. On our own we would be overwhelmed and extinguished but Jesus promises to be with us always, helping us keep our flavour and reflect the Light of the world to those around us.

Join us tomorrow morning from 11am as we see the prophet Isaiah brings God's message that critiques false religion, encourages true worship and points to the certainty that righteousness will be rewarded. “Who will stand against the violence? Who will comfort those who mourn? In an age of cruel rejection who will build for love a home? Come and shake us into action. Come and melt our hearts of stone upon your people… Have mercy, Lord.” Graham Kendrick’s words from 1988 seem even more relevant and prophetic today in an increasingly broken society.
Yet the song-writer also points us to the solution: “For there is a Man of sorrows, who for sinners shed his blood. He can heal the wounds of nations and can wash the guilty clean. Because of Jesus… have mercy, Lord!”
