This month marks 1 year of the monthly Canonmills Book Club and Canonmills Craft Group 🥳

In that time, our Book Club has read over 10 books 📚 covering a range of topics and our Craft Group has made all sorts of things from pinwheels to peg crosses to pottery. It’s been one year, but here’s to many more!

💗 Small groups like this are important for the sense of belonging and community that they instill in people who’re part of them.

Anyone interested in books or crafts is welcome to join one or both of our groups - you do not have to be a member of Canonmills Church to attend. All are welcome!

In keeping with this year’s Doors Open Days theme ‘Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine’ we’ll explore the ways in which our historic building has changed purpose over the years.

✅ We’ll be open for visitors on Saturday 26th September, 10am-4pm.

Originally a two-room penny school where Robert Louis Stevenson (RLS) attended, his infant classroom (now our vestry) will be open to visitors. Here, the RLS Club will have a display and will be available with a wealth of information.

In later days, the building became a base and mission hall for the 46th Company Boys’ Brigade. Along with a photo exhibition on the 46th Boys’ Brigade, members of the disbanded 46th will be on hand to speak about their experiences in the Company.

Our Church Hall will host the Baptist History Project - complete with visual aids and artifacts - who can give enthralling accounts of the history of the church in Edinburgh, and would love to speak to visitors about their project.

Most recently, the building has served as our church home. We’ll be serving refreshments to our visitors who’d like to sit down with a cuppa and take it all in.

And that’s a wrap 🤩 we’re all Fringed out for 2026!

Thank you to Bethany Christian Trust and Edinburgh Festival of the Sacred Arts for choosing us as your Fringe venue this year! There’s been a lot of smiles, stories told, poems read, songs sung and memories made.

We were so pleased to fund the prizes for the Edinburgh Festival of the Sacred Arts Young Religious Poets Competition. Many congratulations to the winners!

The winners of the 2026 Scotland-wide Young Religious Poets Competition were given their awards by established poets Robert Crawford and Christine De Luca at our event last week at Canongate Kirk - The Kirk of Holyroodhouse and Edinburgh Castle with musical interludes provided by students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The event was organised in conjunction with the Scottish Poetry Library with prizes generously funded by Canonmills Church. The prizewinners are: Naomi Reiss 1st prize, Mattea Gernentz 2nd prize, Kate Millar 3rd prize (joint) and Elissa Hunter-Dorans 3rd prize (joint).

God said this to offer comfort during difficult times to Israelites exiled in Babylon. It's a promise He offers to us too. We can trust Him to provide comfort and hope even when the future seems uncertain.

World Photography Day is upon us! We mightn’t have a professional photographer as part of our congregation, but we do like to take lots of photos! 📸

These pictures tell part of the story of our church over the past year and, most importantly for us, they also preserve memories and community that we’ll never forget.

Our church has over 200 years of history and we add to that each day - through small groups, communal meals, special services, commemorative events, coffee mornings and much more.

✨And just like that ✨ we're halfway through our Fringe season and things are going great!

Three shows have already taken place in the last week and we've got three more coming up.

Next Friday, 21 August, the Edinburgh Festival of the Sacred Arts join us with their Irish poetry event, ‘The Shamrock and The Cross: Spectators Under Heaven’.

Later in the month, we'll be re-visited by Bethany Christian Trust Creative Expressions with their final two performances of 'The Ballad of Jack and Stacey' on Tuesday the 25th and Thursday the 27th.
