Canonmills Church

Canonmills Church Since 1987 our congregation has called Canonmills home. The church aims to be welcoming to all, including members of any Christian tradition or none.

Previously a penny school for Robert Louis Stevenson, then a mission hall and a base for the 46th Edinburgh Company of the Boy’s Brigade, today the historic building is a vibrant church in the north of Edinburgh. Though we fondly remember our Baptist roots, we operate independently and ecumenically with our ministry led by our deacons and congregation, working hand-in-hand to ensure all who want t

o be a part of church life and ministry are able to be. There is no permanent minister and instead there is a programme of visiting ministers, from many branches of the Christian faith, who provide a rich variety of services in a traditional style. The church prides itself in its warm and friendly welcome, coming together not just for worship but also socially. Congregants come from widely differing backgrounds, of liberal and inclusive beliefs, with values of caring and looking after one another.

Need a place to hold a group, meeting, or client drop-in session?

The two spaces available for hire in Canonmills Church are suited to meet the needs of groups in our community.

✅ Canonmills Church Hall is our largest space, able to hold up to 65 people sitting theatre style or 25 sitting cabaret style.

✅ The Coffee Room is our smaller, cosier space that is able to accommodate up to 20 people sitting theatre style or up to 15 sitting boardroom style.

✅ We also have a kitchen - available at no extra charge when booked in tandem with one of our two other spaces.

With a congregation that’s passionate about the fair trade movement, we’re really proud to share that we’re now members of Scottish Fair Trade, making our commitment more official.

As a fair trade church we’re doing more to support fair trade - including little things like ensuring the tea, coffee and sugar we use in our after-worship refreshments are fair, ethical and equitable.

By doing this, we’re promoting fairer prices for farmers and suppliers, supporting ethical and sustainable production of products and helping to protect workers’ rights.

We will be led by Rev Matthew Bicket. As part of our ministry, we invite ministers of all Christian denominations to lead our Sunday services, deeply enriching and varying our worship.

The group is now reading The Ghosts of Rome by Joseph O’Connor and will meet to discuss it in the church Coffee Room at 2.30-3.30pm on Wednesday 8 July.
