On International Womens Day I am conscious that I write as a man on a day that rightly centres the voices, experiences and achievements of women. My role today is not to speak over those voices, but to acknowledge them, to listen, and to support the continuing work of equality and dignity for women everywhere.
This year’s theme; Rights, Justice, Action, is a powerful reminder that the struggle for women’s equality is about recognition yes, but primarily about ensuring that rights are upheld worldwide, justice is pursued, and action is taken by institutions to enure equality.
Across the world, women continue to face barriers to opportunity, safety and leadership. The call of this day challenges all of us, including the Church, to ask how we are working to ensure that women’s rights are protected, that injustice is named and challenged, and that our commitment to equality is reflected not only in our words but in our prayers and actions.
In the Scottish Episcopal Church we give thanks for the faith, leadership, ministry and wisdom of the many women who enrich our life together. Their gifts have shaped our communities and strengthened our witness.
As Primus, I remain committed to listening carefully, learning continually, praying for and supporting the full flourishing of women’s ministry and leadership throughout the Church. I call on you to do the same.
May this International Women’s Day renew our commitment to rights, to justice, and to the action needed to make equality a lived reality for women and girls everywhere.
