The Rt Rev Dr Dagmar Winter was installed as the new Bishop of Edinburgh at a joyous service in St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral.

Guests from all over Scotland and from as far as Ghana and New Zealand packed the cathedral, including church leaders the Most Rev Dr Leo Cushley, Roman Catholic Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, the Rt Rev Gordon Kennedy, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and the Most Rev Rt Hon Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York.

Bishop Dagmar, who becomes the 27th Bishop of Edinburgh, described the service of installation and translation (from Bishop of Huntingdon in the Diocese of Ely) as “an amazing and uplifting, hugely encouraging experience”.

After celebrating the Eucharist, she said: “Thank you to everyone who contributed to such a wonderful launch into my new episcopal role.

“In the following weeks and months there will be many to meet and I have much to learn and absorb. I can’t wait to get started! The Synod of the Scottish Episcopal Church next week comes early in my time and will be a further opportunity for important encounters.

“The joy of the Lord is our strength! In this spirit I look forward to working with all the charges in the Diocese of Edinburgh and the wider communities and their leaders beyond as we seek the kingdom Jesus proclaimed.”

The installation of Bishop Dagmar takes the College of Bishops to a full complement of seven bishops once more.

The installation of the Rt Rev Dr Dagmar Winter as Bishop of Edinburgh will take place at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh on Saturday 30 May.

The Service of Translation and Installation, led by the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Most Rev Mark Strange, will begin at 11am and will be streamed live at this link. Due to limited capacity at the cathedral, it is an invitation-only event.

The sermon will be delivered by the Rt Rev Graham Usher, Bishop of Norwich, the lead bishop on the environment for the Church of England. The Bishop-Elect, who leaves the post of Bishop of Huntingdon as part of this translation to Edinburgh, first worked together with Bishop Usher – then a Rector - at Hexham Abbey in 2004, and later both became bishops in East Anglia.

"I am so looking forward to the installation service to be the next Bishop of Edinburgh and to worshipping with you all,” said the Bishop-Elect, who will become the 27th Bishop of Edinburgh. “It is wonderful that so many people from the Diocese are going to be in St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, alongside those associated with my previous ministry and personal friends.

“My huge thanks to Provost John Conway, Director of Music Duncan Ferguson and the Cathedral staff as well as the Diocesan Office team for all they have done in preparation for this occasion. I trust it will encourage each of us further to 'grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ' (Ephesians 4:15)."

Bishop Dagmar will celebrate the Eucharist during the service.

General Synod 2026 will welcome a special guest this year, with the Secretary General of the Anglican Communion attending the three-day meeting in Stirling.

As Secretary General, the Rt Revd Anthony Poggo, serves as an ambassador for the Communion’s member churches, and oversees the work of the Anglican Communion Office (ACO), which is the official Secretariat to the worldwide communion. He will be the first Secretary General to attend General Synod in 21 years.

This year’s General Synod of the Scottish Episcopal Church takes place at the University of Stirling campus from 11 to 13 June, and Bishop Poggo will address members on the final day, when he will discuss the Anglican Communion’s relationship with its members.

“I am delighted that the Rt Rev Anthony Poggo will be joining us for our meeting of the General Synod,” said the Primus. “Bishop Poggo and I meet regularly at Primates and Communion engagements, and the Secretary General indicated a desire to visit General Synod. I was happy to extend an invitation to him.

“He is coming to share with us his view of the life of the Anglican Communion, and to hear what the communion means to us here in Scotland.

“As a church we treasure our membership, identity, and unique history within the Communion and I really look forward to sharing that with Bishop Anthony during his time with us in Scotland.”

Looking forward to his visit, the Secretary General said: “Every Church in the Anglican Communion is valued for its individuality and unique passions. I am greatly looking forward to spending time in fellowship with laypersons, clergy and leadership from the Scottish Episcopal Church in the coming weeks and I thank Primus Mark for inviting me to observe the Church’s synod.

“I am particularly excited to learn more about their ongoing ministry and priorities for the province going forward.”

The Secretary General and ACO staff work to support the instruments of the Anglican Communion, which are the the Anglican Consultative Council, Archbishop of Canterbury, the Primates’ Meeting and the Lambeth Conference. The team is currently preparing for the 19th in-person meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council, ACC-19, which will meet in Belfast June-July, hosted by the Church of Ireland.

The last Secretary General of the Anglican Communion to attend General Synod was the Rev Canon Kenneth Kieron, who was a guest at the 2005 General Synod meeting held in Glasgow.

The Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Most Rev Mark Strange, was part of an Anglican delegation for informal talks took place at the Phanar in Istanbul between the Anglican Communion and the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

"This informal meeting was the latest in a series of talks held for many years to encourage the spirit of mutual trust and understanding between the two Christian traditions." reports the Anglican Communion News Service.

The Primus commented that: "It was good to part of these conversations, and to be there representing the Anglican Communion. It was also an honour to be presented to Ecumenical Patriach Bartholomew."

Bishop Mark was part of a delegation that included the Rt Revd Michael Lewis (co-chair of ICAOTD), Canon Dr Christopher Wells (Director for Unity, Faith and Order at the Anglican Communion Office), and the Rev Neil Vigers (Programme Executive for Unity, Faith and Order at the Anglican Communion Office).

Bishop Ian Paton was the Scottish Episcopal Church representative at this year’s General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Here, he reflects on issues where the two churches have common interests, and asks if the Saint Andrew Declaration can lead us to address these issues together.

“It was a privilege and pleasure to be an ecumenical guest at the General Assembly, and to receive such a warm welcome,” writes the Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane. “It was striking that many of the issues and challenges being reported on, debated and decided by the Commissioners (members) of the Assembly were similar or identical to those we are facing in the SEC and will be discussing at our own General Synod. Issues such as education and formation for ministry; the causes of decline in the Church and what they mean for mission; climate justice and the environment; and the challenge of local ecumenism; and many more, are equally our concern and part of our agenda in the SEC.

“I asked myself the question - and asked it of the Assembly, as I would of our own Synod - how can we find more ways of addressing some of this together, to make our Saint Andrew Declaration a living part of our life?

“One of the important moments in the Assembly was the presentation of the Report on the Legacy of Slavery, another issue we have in common, and on which our own Working Group will be reporting to Synod. The Assembly approved an Apology for the historic involvement of the Church of Scotland in chattel slavery, which was presented to representatives from the Caribbean and West Africa.

“Responding to the apology, the Moderator of the Church in Ghana described two kinds of tree in his country, the plantain and the banana, which can only be distinguished by the fruit. He asked a question about the need for an apology to bear fruit in the Church today - is this apology a plantain or a banana tree? We’ll only know when there is fruit.

“This was a powerful question about any response to the legacy of slavery. But it’s also a question about the Saint Andrew Declaration between our two Churches - is it a plantain or a banana? We will only know by the fruits it bears.”

The Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Most Rev Mark Strange congratulated those elected as MSPs and appointed to the Government, and asked for prayer for all those who will govern and scrutinise over the next five years.

Following the election that took place on 7 May and the election of John Swinney MSP as First Minister, the Scottish Parliament today confirms the appointment of the new Scottish Government.

The Primus said: "Please join me in prayer for those who have been chosen to serve as MSPs, and as members of the Government in this new session of Parliament.

"We hold them in prayer as they start in new roles, or take up existing ones, in the hope that they will serve their constituents and the country with consideration for others in service of our national wellbeing.

"In the Scottish Episcopal Church we will continue to engage positively and proactively with issues of human dignity, climate change, and matters that affect the life and work of the Church."
