St. Barnabas played a crucial role in spreading Christianity, nearly as influential as the original Twelve Apostles. Born in Cyprus as Joseph, a Levite, he was recognized by the early Christian community in Jerusalem for his passion and generosity. He sold land and donated the proceeds to the apostles' fund, earning the name Barnabas, meaning ""son of encouragement.""
When St. Paul converted from persecutor to apostle, many were skeptical. Barnabas supported him, introducing Paul to the apostles and vouching for his sincerity. Their partnership was vital in establishing early Christian communities across the Mediterranean. Despite facing opposition from Jews and non-Jews, their preaching led to numerous conversions and the founding of several Christian communities. Barnabas was sent to Antioch as the official representative of the Jerusalem church to integrate this new community.
A disagreement over including John Mark in their mission work caused a split between Barnabas and Paul. True to his reconciliatory nature, Barnabas took John Mark and continued his missionary efforts in Cyprus. Eventually, Paul, Barnabas, and Mark reconciled. St. Barnabas met a martyr's death in Cyprus, stoned for his preaching. Remembered as a man filled with the Holy Spirit and faith, he remained joyful and dedicated to spreading God’s word, even when facing expulsion from Antioch in Pisidia. His legacy continues to inspire steadfast faith and commitment to the Christian mission.
O Lord God Almighty, who gave your holy Apostle Barnabas special gifts of the Holy Spirit: We ask You not to leave us without Your manifold gifts, and help us to use them always for Your honor and glory.
