Our service this Sunday, 13 September, celebrates the verse anthem – a distinctive and hugely popular form of church music in which sections for solo voices (the ‘verse’) alternate with passages for the full choir.

We’ll be performing wonderful examples by Henry Purcell, Adrian Batten and Orlando Gibbons, including Gibbons’ beautiful See, see, the word is incarnate.

Sunday’s recital is a meditation leading from Candlemas to Pentecost – a programme arranged for the lower voices of our choir, focusing on the ‘early music’ repertoire of Victoria, J. S. Bach, and Tallis, concluding with a setting of Come Holy Ghost specifically arranged for this event. The music is woven around a sequence of poems based on photographs of the Antony Gormley sculptures that stand along the Water of Leith, reflecting on themes of penitence, forgiveness, acceptance, and hope – very fitting for the ethos of the Robin Chapel.
