A little art, a little history…and a sneak peek at something rather special!

We're giving you a sneak preview of some of the treasures heading into this year's Christian Aid Art Sale. And trust us, there are some beauties!

First up, three original oil paintings by Fred Uhlman (1901–1985), all still in their original frames.

Uhlman's story is quite something. Having fled N**i Germany in the 1930s, he eventually made his home in Britain, where he became a recognised figure in Modern British Art. Today, his work can be found in collections including the Fitzwilliam Museum and the V&A.

These three paintings come from the remarkable collection of Edinburgh writer, intellectual and art enthusiast Dr Halla Beloff, generously donated by her family.

All three paintings are signed and dated, and one, Hills in Wales, has an extra-special touch: a personal dedication from the artist, who gave it as a gift. A little piece of art history with a lovely personal story attached!

And this is just the beginning! We'll be sharing more highlights over the coming days, so keep your eyes peeled. 👀

Edinburgh New Town Church Christian Aid Scotland

As we prepare for our Christian Aid Art Sale, there’s a special opportunity to hear about the work our fundraising helps support.

On 18 October at 7pm, Edinburgh New Town Church will welcome Christian Aid partners from South Sudan for an evening service, alongside the Right Rev Gordon Kennedy, Moderator of the General Assembly.

Rev Tut Nguoth, a Presbyterian minister working with the Presbyterian Relief and Development Agency, and James Wani, Christian Aid’s lead in South Sudan, will share their experiences of peacebuilding, supporting communities and rebuilding hope amid conflict, displacement and poverty.

Come along to hear directly from those working on the ground, learn how we can support them, and give our visitors a warm Edinburgh welcome.

Our Christian Aid Art Sale flyer is printed - and there’s plenty to look forward to! 🎨

This year’s sale brings together works from the collection of Dr Halla Beloff, including artists such as Richard Hamilton and Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, alongside Joan Musgrave’s beautiful landscapes and botanical works. Both collections have been generously donated by their families.

Whether you’re an art lover, looking for something special for your home or simply curious, come along and browse while supporting Christian Aid.

There’s plenty to interest the serious art lover, and plenty for the rest of us who simply know what we like!

On Sunday we hosted a celebration for our amazing volunteers.
There was cake, there was prosecco and there was conversation, laughter and reconnection!
We spent time reviewing this year's sale and hearing feedback from everyone who attended.

Thousands of visitors helped raise more than £65,000 at Edinburgh’s annual New Town Church Book Sale, supporting the work of Christian Aid.

We are absolutely overwhelmed to share that this year’s book sale raised an incredible £67,000 for Christian Aid. 🎉📚❤️

What began over 50 years ago has once again delivered an extraordinary result, thousands upon thousands of books, puzzles, toys, CDs, DVDs, paintings..... finding new homes, queues around the block, packed bags, happy readers, aching feet, endless boxes… and an army of volunteers who made it all happen.

To everyone who donated books, bought books, sorted books, lifted boxes, made tea, baked cakes, manned stalls, put up signs, packed vans, swept floors, carried tables, recycled cardboard, and kept smiling through sheer exhaustion, thank you. Truly.

To our wonderful friends and neighbours at The George Hotel and Aberdeen Finance, thank you for sending your teams to help us throughout the sale week. From carrying tables and boxes out each morning and back in again every evening, to shifting countless heavy boxes of books around the church building. Your kindness, energy and sheer muscle power made our outdoor stalls possible, allowing us to display and sell even more books, and ultimately raise even more money for Christian Aid. We are so grateful for your support.

This sale is powered entirely by community spirit, kindness, and generosity.

Every single purchase will now help support Christian Aid’s work around the world, and that is something very special indeed.
