Finding God in the Details
As I rest my eyes on this stunning harbour scene, Iām struck by the beauty of the reflections on the water. Each mast and hull, though standing tall, is also mirrored below ā a soft, inverted double of reality.
Ignatius of Loyola taught us the practice of āfinding God in all thingsā, and in this moment, the reflections seem to me like a metaphor for that very truth. The boats are real, solid, and present, but their reflections are also here, part of the same image, giving it depth and a different kind of beauty.
Just as the sun illuminates the town and clouds above, its light allows us to see the water and these secondary images. In a similar way, Godās presence is not always a roaring, obvious thing. Often, itās a reflection, a whisper, a glint of light on the everyday ordinary.
Can I find that reflection in the kind word of a neighbour, the warmth of a morning cuppa, or the unexpected beauty of a clouds-filled sky? Can I see God not just āup thereā but right here, in the details of creation and the rhythms of daily life?
Letās pray for the grace to see beyond the surface, to notice the subtle, mirrored presence of the Divine in all that we encounter today.
