Remembering Imam Jazuli
Imam Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn Abi Bakr al-Jazuli (may Allah be pleased with him) was a 15th-century Moroccan scholar, descended from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through his grandson Imam Hasan. He belonged to the Berber Jazula tribe in the Sus region of Morocco. He is most famously known as the author of Dala'il al-Khayrat.
He studied locally before going to the famous Madrasat al-Saffarin in Fez (where his student room is still pointed out to visitors). After settling a tribal feud, he left Morocco and spent the next forty years in Makkah, Madinah, and Jerusalem. Upon returning to Fez, he completed his masterpiece, Dala'il al-Khayrat. He was initiated into the Shadhili order by Sharif Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Amghar.
He was poisoned by the governor of Asfi and passed away in 1464 AH (c. 869-873 AH) while engaged in prayer. Seventy-seven years later, his body was exhumed for transfer to Marrakesh and found to be completely uncorrupted — as fresh as the day he was buried, with shaving marks still visible.
The story behind Dala'il al-Khayrat: Once, on a journey, Imam al-Jazuli desperately needed water for ablution but found a well with no bucket or rope. A young girl saw his distress, prayed into the well, and the water rose to the top by itself. Amazed, he asked how. She replied: "I was able to do this through asking for blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ." Witnessing this, he resolved to compile Dala'il al-Khayrat — a collection of prayers upon the Prophet that has since illuminated hearts across the Muslim world for over five centuries. Illuminate yours too.
