Juventutem Edinburgh

Juventutem Edinburgh Juventutem Edinburgh is a group of young Catholics (aged 18-35) who meet on a monthly basis for socials, spiritual talks, and Holy Mass.

The group is based at St Cuthbert's Chapel (FSSP Scotland) on 6 Belford Park EH4 3DP; (newcomers are always welcome!) Juventutem Edinburgh is a chapter of Fœderatio Internationalis Juventutem (FIJ), a Catholic network fostering the sanctification of the youths worldwide according to the Roman traditions of the Church. We wish to contribute to the sanctification of the members of Juventutem and of

any youths who are our contemporaries. Members of international Juventutem federation have an interest in and love of the Traditional Latin Mass – which is also known as the ‘Tridentine Mass,’ the ‘Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite,’ the ‘Gregorian Mass,’ and the ‘usus antiquior’ (older use). The name ‘Juventutem’ itself is the Latin word for youth and it appears in the opening lines of the traditional Mass. Juventutem Edinburgh is meeting next on 15th August (Sat)—the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady!
Holy Hour from 11am, sung Latin Mass at 12pm, followed by pizza lunch and social, concluding with sung second vespers for the feast of the Assumption!

If you intend to join the pizza lunch, please send us a message or email so that we know how much food and drinks to prepare! See you then!

On Saturday 20 June, in the parish church of Lindenberg, priestly ordination was conferred upon 13 seminarians of the FSSP by Bishop Marc Aillet, Bishop of Bayonne, Lescar and Oloron in France.

Among them are three Frenchmen, two Portuguese, two Czechs, one Austrian, one Croatian, one Hungarian, one Italian, one Pole and one Swede.

Together with the twelve new priests ordained on 28 May in the Cathedral of Omaha in the United States, the FSSP now numbers more than 400 priests.

First Saturday—votive Mass of the Immaculate Heart of Mary—we need Our Lady in order to truly comprehend Our Lord.

At our post-social talk, Professor Erik Tonning spoke on Fr G. M. Hopkins SJ’s Wreck of the Deutschland and explained how the poem not only re-interpreted the death of the five Franciscan nuns in a shipwreck on 7th Dec 1875 but also expressed Hopkins’s own conversion and journey of faith—Hopkins, coming from an Anglican background, was received into the Church by St John Henry Newman but suffered a lot as a result of his conversion, just like Newman did.
As Professor Tonning explains through Hopkins’s poem, our hope, which should be a consequence of our faith, should not be a mere earthly optimism, but should be grounded in Christ’s promise of eternal life. The “tall nun” who was calling “O Christ, Christ, come quickly” was not calling for God’s rescue but was indeed yearning for the reunion with Christ, her spouse.
