Emmaus Community of St Benedict

Emmaus Community of St Benedict We are a new monastic community, based in Edinburgh, seeking to follow the Rule of St Benedict. We should never assume that we have arrived.

About us
We meet weekly (online) to pray Evening Prayer and Lectio Divina. We meet in person 4 times a year and make a short annual retreat together. Our commitment is to the Rule of St Benedict, to praying with and for one another, and to supporting our community.

--------------------------------------
We welcome people from all Christian denominations to explore with us. Those who decide to j

oin, after a period of discernment, will be invited to commit to our Rule (see below) and to making an annual oblation with the community.
--------------------------------------
We have a monthly (online) group to pray Lectio Divina together. That group, which meets on Saturday mornings is open to everyone. We have a monthly (online) book reading group - do ask for details. Our Rule:

Our Rule is the Rule of St Benedict as we discern its expression in the life of our community and in our daily lives. We commit to deepen our stability in Christ by meeting weekly to pray the Evening Office, practise Lectio Divina and read the Holy Rule. We understand that our conversion of life is rooted in our stability. It is a process of becoming, an openness to what God is calling us to become, both as individuals and a community. We seek to remember that the Rule describes itself as ‘a little rule for beginners’. Lectio Divina is a practice on which our conversion of life is based. We listen together and to one another and thus have an interaction with one another and with God. Individually and collectively we seek to be open to God by cherishing silence, listening deeply, discerning the will of Christ, walking humbly with God and others. Reflecting on our journey, stability doesn’t mean standing still. Our longevity as a community reflects our ability to be flexible.

Today, we gathered as a community to renew our promises, and to welcome Jo as she made hers for the first time. It was a simple but moving act as we spoke the words of oblation and placed our copies of the Rule of St Benedict on the altar table.

"Listen and attend with the ear of your heart" St Benedict.

The Rule of Saint Benedict is a set of precepts written by Saint Benedict of Nursia in the 6th century for monks living communally under the authority of an abbot. It's a foundational text for Western Christian monasticism, emphasizing a balanced life of prayer, work, and community, with a focus on humility, obedience, and stability. As a new monastic community, we try to live by the wisdom and in the spirit of Benedict's Rule.
