A number of people requested the prayer at the end of Sam’s talk on Sunday, so thought we would post it here — an extended paraphrase of the Lord’s Prayer.
Heavenly Father, it’s incredible that we can access you through prayer; that the Designer and Creator of the Universe would incline his ear to us. Yet you’ve made us your children!
Lord God, we want your kingdom first, above all else. From the very depths of our hearts we cry out and remind ourselves of this. We can’t wait until creation looks just as you willed, just as you designed, when all sin, sickness and suffering end.
Father, would you equip us with everything we need, in the natural, and the spiritual, to seek your kingdom first.
Would you give us just what we need for today, for all the good works you have for us. Yet not so much that we’re tempted to stockpile worldly treasures, which capture our hearts, and take our dependance off you.
We thank you that your mercies are new every morning. We pray forgive us for all our failures to truly love yourself and others. We wipe the slate clean for all those who have harmed us, hurt us, wound us up and got right under our skin. We start again completely fresh today, and we rinse all unforgivenness right out of our hearts.
Lord, we know how human we are, how vulnerable we can be sometimes. The spirit is willing, the flesh is weak. Lord, we pray deeply for your guidance, to take the long path, the inconvenient path, the costly path that follows your voice, your wisdom, your guidance. We know your way is best, and it’s perfect love for our lives. Help us help each other, as we follow you together, as brothers and sisters.
Lord, we’re in a world that is hostile to you. Your light reveals their darkness, and the enemy hates it when your light shines in us. We know we’re in a battle. Lord, would you deliver us, save us from the evil at hand — both seen and unseen. From the things we understand, and all that goes on behind the scenes.
Would you do this all for your glory, all for your kingdom, all for your children here on earth, and to help us reach those who don’t know you. Help us to selflessly love, just as
