The Venerable Robert Miller has been appointed Chaplain of the Chapel Royal, at historic Hampton Court Palace, and will leave our Diocese in November to take up his new role. The appointment was announced a short time ago by Canon Paul Wright LVO (Sub-Dean of the Chapels Royal) and Nicola Andrews, Palaces Group Director Historic Royal Palaces.

The Chapel Royal is a part of the ecclesiastical Household of His Majesty The King and has always been an active church within the Church of England. Kings and Queens have worshipped there for centuries. The Chaplain is responsible for ensuring that the Chapel is run effectively and for delivering a programme of regular worship and of special events. Leading and managing a team of staff and volunteers, the postholder also works with teams across Hampton Court to provide an exceptional visitor experience, ensuring the Chapel is a friendly and welcoming space for all.

The move to the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames will be a considerable wrench for Archdeacon Miller who, for the last 12 years, has been serving as Archdeacon of Derry and Rector of the CCCMSP Group of Parishes (Christ Church, Culmore, M**f and St Peter’s). During more than 30 years in ordained ministry he has acquired considerable experience across parish, diocesan, cathedral, civic and public life.

Archdeacon Miller will take with him to Richmond a deep affinity with the Anglican choral and liturgical tradition, alongside significant experience of sacred heritage, visitor welcome and public engagement through initiatives such as the Walled City Passion.

The Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Rt Rev Andrew Forster, has congratulated Ven. Miller on his new appointment but says he will miss the Archdeacon’s advice and support. “This is a tremendous honour for Robert. The role of Chaplain of the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace is one he is eminently qualified for and I am sure he will make a great success of the opportunity to lead a world-renowned place of worship.

“It is a bitter-sweet moment, though, for the Diocese of Derry and Raphoe. Since my appointment as Bishop, seven years ago, Robert has been a wise counsellor, a stalwart supporter and a valued friend. I will miss him enormously. I am better placed than most to appreciate his organisational flair and strategic wisdom, and know better than most how much those gifts and talents will be missed at a diocesan level.

“Robert will take with him the very best wishes of all in our diocese and can be assured of our prayers to buoy him on this exciting change of direction in his ministry.”

"We are delighted to announce the appointment of the Venerable Robert Stephen Miller MStJ FRSA as Chaplain of the Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace. Robert brings more than thirty years’ ordained ministry within the Anglican Communion, with wide experience across parish, diocesan, cathedral, civic and public life, including service since 2012 as Archdeacon of Derry in the Diocese of Derry and Raphoe. Rooted in worship, preaching, pastoral care and public service, he brings a deep affinity with the Anglican choral and liturgical tradition, alongside significant experience of sacred heritage, visitor welcome and public engagement through initiatives such as the Walled City Passion in Derry/Londonderry. We warmly welcome Robert to Hampton Court Palace and look forward to working with him when he takes up the role in November."
