Diocese of Durham

Diocese of Durham The Diocese of Durham is the Church of England between the River Tyne-River Tees; Durham Dales-Sea.

The Diocese of Durham covers a geographical area of 2,530 square kilometres in the North East of England and the churches within that space serve a population of nearly 1.5 million people. There are 234 licensed clergy, 49 Readers, 417 Churchwardens, 209 Parochial Church Councils (PCCs) and countless faithful volunteers providing loving service through mission and ministry across the Diocese of Du

rham. As well as all the worshipping communities, there are 57 schools (primary and secondary) 57 headteachers, supported by 2,000 school teachers and other staff who are educating around 17,000 school children across the diocesan area. Our mission together as the Church of England in the Diocese of Durham is to ‘Bless our communities in Jesus’ name for the transformation of us all’. Following prayer and shared reflection, we have sensed God’s call to do this over the coming five years by working together as a family of churches to bring transformation by:
Challenging Poverty
Energising Growth
Caring for God's Creation
Engaging with Children, Youth & 18-25s

Please keep them in your prayers as they begin this year-long journey of exploring Christian vocation and ministry, growing in faith and gaining valuable experience alongside local church leaders and communities. We pray that this year will be a time of growth, discovery and discernment as they seek where God may be calling them. 🙏

Youth provision has always been a top priority in Durham Diocese. Now our churches are improving their offer after taking part in the Launchpad programme, designed by the Christian youth work charity Youthscape.

One such example is St Chad Sunderland . Children and young people have always been welcome at St Chad’s. But without any formal youth provision in place, the church’s biggest challenge was retaining them. Now thanks to Launchpad, St Chad’s offers an after-school club, a holiday club and is in the process of taking over the running of the community’s toddler group which is based at the church. All Saints Stranton continued its 900th anniversary celebrations in spectacular style with a sponsored abseil from the church tower!
Twenty-three brave people from the church and local community, aged from 6 to over 70, took on the challenge. 🙌
The day also gave visitors the chance to explore the Past Memories Exhibition, celebrating the people, stories and history of Stranton Church and its local community.
