Named, Known and Called

Named, Known and Called Named, Known and Called is a day conference for women exploring C of E ordination, at Cranmer Hall, God’s calling looks different for everyone.

Named, Known and Called is a day conference for women exploring ordination. If ordination in the Church of England is something that God might be nudging you about, why not spend a day thinking, praying and reflecting on leadership in the Bible, calling, and all its practicalities? There are five seminars: each will run twice during the day to give the opportunity to attend the ones which are most

relevant to you. How do I become a vicar? Combining ministry and family life
Singleness and ministry
The life of a parish priest
Why get ordained young? There will also be the opportunity to examine women's ministry from a Biblical perspective, to explore what it means to be called, and to worship and pray together. The conference is free of charge but registration is essential, as places are limited (http://namedknowncalled.org.uk/register/).

3 days to go! Today we are profiling the fabulous Revd Susie Thorp: chaplain of St John’s College, Durham and Vicar of St Wilfred’s Sunderland

Susie splits her time between serving as chaplain to St John’s College and being priest in
charge at St Wilfred’s Church, in Doxford, Sunderland.

Susie’s role as chaplain is to be available to both students and staff, to be a friendly face, a listening ear and genuine support. Her role is to support everyone: those with a faith, those without and
those who wish to explore a spiritual dimension to their lives. She is also passionate about linking
the two parts of her job and growing partnerships between Doxford parish and St John’s college.
Susie’s dog, Millie, in many ways also serves as assistant chaplain.

Today's featured speaker: the wonderful Revd Lis Goddard, Vicar of St James the Less in Pimlico, Chair of AWESOME

Lis has been Vicar of St James the Less since September 2010. This follows a year spent as Associate
Vicar at St Mary’s Stoke Bishop in Bristol; a short-term appointment to provide consultancy on
leadership structures. She trained for ordination alongside her husband, Andrew, being ordained in
1996 and sharing a curacy with him in Oxfordshire.

Since then, she has also been a university chaplain and worked as Tutor for Ministerial Formation at
Wycliffe Hall and Assistant Minister at St Andrew’s Church in North Oxford. She is the current Chair
of Awesome, a network of ordained women evangelicals. Her first book, The Gender Agenda, co-
written with Clare Hendry, was published in November 2010. She is passionate about seeing people
come to Jesus and grow in faith, and loves spending time with her husband and family.

Today's featured seminar leaders....The Revds Emily and Mark Hudghton, Curates, Diocese of Durham

Emily and Mark met at York university and during a subsequent year working for their churches married. They both sensed a calling to ordination during their teens but formally began the discernment process during their intern years. They journeyed through the discernment process together, and later trained at Cranmer Hall together – an experience they describe as a joy. Both Emily and Mark are now ordained. Emily is currently serving her curacy at Stockton Parish Church (SPC), Stockton-on-Tees and Mark at St John’s, Shildon. Emily has a fondness for tea and Mark is known for his dashing selection of clergy shirts.

With less than a week to go befoe Named Known and Called 2017 (woohoo!) we're going to spend this week profiling some of the amazing people who will be speaking and leading seminars on Saturday.

First up: The Revd Dr Kate Bruce

Kate is Deputy Warden at Cranmer Hall, Tutor in Homiletics and CODEC Research
Fellow in Preaching

Kate was ordained in 2001, after seven very happy years as a secondary school English teacher in
Yorkshire. Following a curacy in Ripon, she worked as Associate Priest at St Oswald’s Durham and
was Chaplain to Van Mildert and Trevelyan Colleges.

Following this she was appointed as Chaplain to St John’s College, a post she combined with PhD
research as Fellow in Preaching with CODEC which included teaching preaching and apologetics at
Cranmer Hall. She took up her post as Deputy Warden and Tutor in Homiletics in April 2013 and was
awarded her doctoral thesis on imagination and preaching last year.

Kate is the Fellow in preaching at CODEC, which is a research centre of Durham University, based at
St John’s College, exploring the interfaces between the Bible, theology, the digital environment and
contemporary culture.

The online Vocations Discernment Survey shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes to complete and will be open until 16th April. We’re really grateful to you for taking time to help us with our work!"
