Hi everyone,

I hope you’re all well and still managing to get out on the trails when you can.

I wanted to let you know, sadly and with a bit of a heavy heart, that I’m still putting a brave face on the constant fatigue I’ve been dealing with. As much as I’ve hoped to restart our little hiking group, I simply can’t manage the walking and the talking just yet.

I promise that when I’m able to manage even a half-decent ramble again, and enjoy the company properly, I’ll bring the group back together. Hopefully by Spring 2026, God willing.

Thank you for your patience, kindness, and understanding.
God bless,
Fr J

👣 Hello my fellow boot-wearers and hill-wanderers!

First things first, apologies that our boots have been gathering more dust than mud lately! 😅

But here’s the good news: this autumn we’re relaunching our walks! 🍂🍁
We’ll be starting small, short, gentle walks to stretch the legs, blow away the cobwebs, and ease us all back into the rhythm of the trail. Perfect for newcomers, those returning after a break, or anyone who just fancies a good natter while strolling through God’s beautiful countryside.

So dig out your boots (check for spiders first 🕷️), clean out the flask, and keep an eye out for the first autumn date announcement. Let’s get this little walking family back together, because the best views are always better with friends. 🌿

See you on the path soon,
Fr John 🚶‍♂️✨

Dear Trail Disciples,

As many of you know, next month I will set out to lead my final Camino.
It will be a walk full of gratitude, reflection, and, if I’m honest, a touch of sadness knowing this particular journey is coming to an end.

I would be deeply grateful if you would pray for me as I prepare, pray for strength, for steady steps, and for a heart wide open to whatever God wishes to teach me along the way.

Some of you know I’ve been adjusting to a new way of living after my two strokes. This has been a season of challenge, but also one of surprising grace. Out of it has come a new and exciting walk, different in style, but rich in spirit, that I’m eager for you to consider joining in the future. so please keep following and consider what I offer on this FB page

So while we might feel a twinge of disappointment that the Camino chapter is closing, I hope you’ll also share in my anticipation for what’s ahead. The trail may change, but the spirit of the journey—the fellowship, the prayer, the wonder—remains the same.

With gratitude and hope

Fr John

🏞️ Who's up for St Cuthbert's Way?

Looking ahead to September/October next year (2026), I'm thinking about walking the St Cuthbert’s Way (Health permit), a beautiful long-distance trail from Melrose in the Scottish Borders to Holy Island (Lindisfarne) on the Northumberland coast.

It’s about 100km (62 miles) through varied and often stunning scenery, from peaceful valleys and open moorland to ancient abbeys and the unforgettable tidal crossing to Holy Island. A truly rewarding walk for those who love history, landscapes, and a bit of adventure!

Just sounding things out for now, would anyone be interested in joining? You could do the whole trail or just sections of it depending on your availability and fitness.

👉 Important note: While I’m happy to coordinate and walk with others, I must make it clear that I can't accept any responsibility for anyone's safety. As with any hike, there's always an element of risk involved, each person joins entirely at their own risk and is responsible for their own planning, kit, and decisions on the trail.

If that sounds good and you're curious, let me know below or drop a message, and feel free to tag others who might be keen! 😁

Hola Camino Family! 👣🌄

The countdown is on! Soon we’ll be lacing up our (well-worn-in, I hope!) hiking boots in Ferrol and setting off on our adventure toward the beautiful Santiago de Compostela. Whether you're a seasoned pilgrim or it’s your first time, the buzz of excitement is real!

Make sure you’ve packed those trusty blister plasters (yes, they will save lives), topped up your first aid kits, and have your water bottles ready to be filled at every fountain we find. More importantly, get ready to meet incredible people, share stories, laughs, and maybe even a few groans on the uphill stretches.

For these special days, we’ll become a little Camino family, walking at our own paces, but always looking out for one another. It’s not just about the miles; it’s about the shared journey, the kindness of strangers, and the joy of arriving… together.

See you on the trail,
Buen Camino! 🌟

Hey beloved hiking crew,

It’s been far too long since I’ve laced up my boots and pretended I was born to climb mountains (or at least moderately steep hills). As most of you know, I had a bit of an unplanned health “detour” with a stroke, which rather rudely interrupted my hiking schedule!

BUT, I’m thrilled to say recovery is slowly but surely happening. I'm back on my feet and gradually increasing my solo walks, even if right now they’re more “epic journey to the end of the street” than “conqueror of Everest.”

Please don’t think I’ve given up! Quite the opposite, I’m sharpening my walking sticks and plotting my return soon. In fact, I hope to announce some group walks very soon… though fair warning: they may be shorter than what you adrenaline junkies are used to. Think “gentle stroll with scenic snack breaks” rather than “summit or bust.”

Appreciate all your love and patience, can’t wait to see your faces again soon, even if it’s at the pace of a sloth on a sightseeing tour.

With love, laughter, and slightly wobbly legs

Father John!

Hiking Group is Back (Gently!) 🥾🌿

At long last, I'm finally feeling on the mend and ready to very gently restart the hiking group! 🎉 This will be a relaxed, easy-paced walk, ideal if you're looking to ease back into walking or just want to stretch your legs and enjoy some company.

We'll be doing the familiar river walk from St Giles Church, down to the river, then heading towards the Rose Tree pub at Shincliffe for a drink of tea, coffee or something stronger. (weather permitting)

After a short rest, we’ll make our way back along the river towards Durham, leaving the path at Framwellgate Bridge, and passing through the city. If I’m still feeling okay, we might stop for another short break at The Woodman Inn at the top of Claypath, before ending back at St Giles.

This route is designed with a few pauses for me, so I can check in with how I’m doing, but anyone and everyone is welcome to join us, whether you're there for the full walk or just part of it. The aim is to get a minimum of 9,000 steps in, but more importantly, to enjoy the walk and reconnect.

Hope to see you soon! 🌞

Date to be confirmed (After my next trip to the doc's!!)

Dear Trail Disciples,

As we gather to celebrate the joy and warmth of Christmas, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for this amazing group. Thank you for being such an inspiring community of explorers and adventurers!

The New Year is a time for fresh starts, and I’m thrilled to share that as soon as I’m back up and running, I plan to kick things off with a new chapter for us. Our hikes will start from scratch with less ambitious routes to ease us back into the rhythm of the trails. As summer begins to loom on the horizon, we’ll build up to more exciting adventures together!

Here’s to new beginnings, cherished memories, and a 2025 filled with outdoor magic. Until then, have a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and may your days be merry and bright! 🎅🎁✨

Warm wishes,
Father John
