Durham Singers are coming back to St Brandon's on Saturday 27 June at 7.30pm
They will be performing a vibrant programme of devotional music from Mexico written by composers associated with Puebla Cathedral, one of the most important religious and musical centres of 17th- and 18th-century New Spain. The Cathedral was home to a flourishing musical tradition where European sacred styles met the energy and diversity of the New World.
The result is music that is both refined and full of life – soaring motets, joyful villancicos, andserene Marian hymns that once echoed through the Cathedral’s vaulted ceilings. Featuring
works by Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla, Gaspar Fernandes, Juan de Araujo and their contemporaries.
