You are invited to join us on Thursday evening at 7pm at Chirnside Church as we journey through the night when Jesus was arrested. We meet to socialize and share the Lord's Supper. Some may choose to have their feet washed (totally optional) and then the Tenebrae readings. Tenebrae means shadows, and as the readings are read, lights are extinguished and the shadows draw closer.

Good Afternoon All
I am writing to inform you that, w/c Monday 18th August 2025, Scottish Borders Council will commence headstone safety inspections and remedial works in the following cemeteries:
Benrig
Chirnside
Greenlaw Old
Maxton Old
Notices have been displayed at all sites since October 2024, advising of our intent to undertake these works. These Inspections are required as part of our duties as a Burial Authority to ensure public safety in cemeteries and burial grounds.
What to Expect:
Headstone Safety Inspections are carried out by our own specially trained staff following stringent procedures. Depending on the individual circumstances, any headstones identified as unsafe will be made safe by being either:
Socketed securely into the ground
Laid flat
Sometimes in very exceptional circumstances we cordon off a headstone and install appropriate signage.
Any headstone laid flat will have a notice installed adjacent, with information relating to the programme and contact details for further enquiries. Additional information is available via leaflets distributed across our contact centers and also online at: www.scotborders.gov.uk/headstonetesting
Memorial owners may wish to undertake their own repair works ahead of our Headstone Safety Inspections - the above information leaflet and website may be a helpful guide. If you have any queries around this please get in touch.
Community Engagement:
We kindly ask for your support in sharing this information with any local interest groups or individuals who may be affected or wish to be informed. The Council will also be promoting this initiative through its social media channels and dedicated webpages.
Respectful Approach:
We understand the sensitive nature of this work and assure you that all actions will be carried out with the utmost care and respect, and only where absolutely necessary.
Contact Information:
If you would like further information or wish to arrange a short demonstration at any of the listed cemeteries, please contact us on 0300 100 1800 or by email [email protected]
For any additional queries, please feel free to contact the Bereavement Team using the contact details above.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Kind Regards
Diane
