On Pentecost Sunday over a hundred origami peace cranes were placed around the church and held in the hands of the congregation at the intercessions.
They provide a visible symbol, added to our prayer table, of our commitment to praying for peace in the many places of conflict around the world.
The cranes were made during Lent by members of the congregation, the making of them providing a quiet, focused and mindful space when the clamour of the world sometimes seems overwhelming.
The making of the cranes were inspired by the story of Sadako, a child survivor of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima. She developed leukaemia, believed in the folklore of the cranes and began to make 1000 origami cranes in the hope of healing. What happened after she passed away inspired a movement for praying for peace in the making of the cranes.
The inspiring story is widely available on line and in the book,
One Thousand Cranes, the story of Sadako and the childrenโ€™s Peace Statue by Takayuki Ishii.

Israeli Settlers Set Taybeh Ablaze: The Oldest Christian Community in the World

Israeli settlers torched agricultural fields surrounding Taybeh on the night of 9 June 2026, the latest in a relentless campaign of violence against one of the most historically significant Christian villages on earth. Located east of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, the 5th-century Church of Saint George stands as one of the oldest functioning Christian churches in existence. Today, roughly 1,300 Palestinian Christians call it home.

The attack follows a devastating pattern. Settlers have previously torched cars, burned the Church of Saint George and its adjoining graveyard, and spray-painted threatening graffiti across village walls. A new settlement established nearby has accelerated the violence.

According to the United Nations, Israeli settlers killed seven Palestinians and wounded over 800 in 2025 alone, a 130% rise from the year prior. The UN has concluded that Israeli authorities are directly enabling this violence through financial support, military protection, and judicial impunity for perpetrators.
