Update on Properties at Legamaddy
Last summer the Diocesan Property Advisor, Mr Mark Patterson, met with Fr Peter and the Parish Finance Committee at Legamaddy to discuss the former school property and the former curate’s house which are owned by the Parish and have been vacant for many years.
The two properties were surveyed by Mr Patterson and a diocesan architect during the autumn. The Diocesan Trustees are recommending that the former school be sold on the open market and the former curate’s house retained given its proximity to the church, the car park and the current primary school.
A public parish meeting was held in Our Lady of Knock Shrine, Legamaddy on the 5th February to discuss the above recommendation. Those present unanimously expressed that the wider Parish should be encouraged to consider the above recommendation and write to Mr Patterson with their comments on the matter.
Much discussion took place regarding what the funds raised from the sale of the former school could be used for, with ideas such as demolition of the curate’s house and extension of the car park and construction of an improved accessible toilet.
The architect’s advice is that the former school property could, from a planning perspective, be converted into a single detached residential property with private car parking.
It is encouraged that any parishioner who wishes to comment should e-mail Mr Patterson prior to the 28th February 2025 at [email protected]
Parish Pastoral Council
At our recent meeting on Tuesday 4th February we discussed the following: formal agreement on and further development of the Downpatrick Family of Parishes (including our Parish), ongoing formation training for Pastoral Councils, the recently formed umbrella Safeguarding Committee for the Family of Parishes as well as a new page that will be in place with effect from February 14th as mentioned in the bulletin last weekend. We also discussed the Jubilee Year and ways of raising awareness within the parish including our schools. Easter ceremonies will mirror last year’s and dates were agreed for Cemetery Sunday, again further details will be provided in the Bulletin.
The next meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council will take place on Tuesday 4th March 2025.
The members of the Parish of Bright Pastoral Council are: Gertie Small (Chair), Suzanne Hogg (Secretary), Cyril Carr, Mary Wylie, Mary McGrath, Martin Fitzsimons, Damien Wylie, Fr Peter.
