Update on Properties at Legamaddy
Last summer the Diocesan Property Advisor, Mr Mark Patterson, met with Fr Peter and the Parish Finance Committee at Legamaddy to discuss the former school property and the former curate’s house which are owned by the Parish and have been vacant for many years.

The two properties were surveyed by Mr Patterson and a diocesan architect during the autumn. The Diocesan Trustees are recommending that the former school be sold on the open market and the former curate’s house retained given its proximity to the church, the car park and the current primary school.

A public parish meeting was held in Our Lady of Knock Shrine, Legamaddy on the 5th February to discuss the above recommendation. Those present unanimously expressed that the wider Parish should be encouraged to consider the above recommendation and write to Mr Patterson with their comments on the matter.

Much discussion took place regarding what the funds raised from the sale of the former school could be used for, with ideas such as demolition of the curate’s house and extension of the car park and construction of an improved accessible toilet.

The architect’s advice is that the former school property could, from a planning perspective, be converted into a single detached residential property with private car parking.

It is encouraged that any parishioner who wishes to comment should e-mail Mr Patterson prior to the 28th February 2025 at [email protected]

Parish Pastoral Council
At our recent meeting on Tuesday 4th February we discussed the following: formal agreement on and further development of the Downpatrick Family of Parishes (including our Parish), ongoing formation training for Pastoral Councils, the recently formed umbrella Safeguarding Committee for the Family of Parishes as well as a new page that will be in place with effect from February 14th as mentioned in the bulletin last weekend. We also discussed the Jubilee Year and ways of raising awareness within the parish including our schools. Easter ceremonies will mirror last year’s and dates were agreed for Cemetery Sunday, again further details will be provided in the Bulletin.

The next meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council will take place on Tuesday 4th March 2025.

The members of the Parish of Bright Pastoral Council are: Gertie Small (Chair), Suzanne Hogg (Secretary), Cyril Carr, Mary Wylie, Mary McGrath, Martin Fitzsimons, Damien Wylie, Fr Peter.

Downpatrick Family of Parishes page
As parishioners will know, Pathways to the Future have worked in recent months to create ‘Parish Families’. The Parish of Bright is now part of the 'Downpatrick Family of Parishes’ (Downpatrick, Saul & Ballee, Kilclief, Dunsford & Ardglass, Bright); this title was agreed by all the local clergy.

As part of this new family, we are working to share committees, events, and social media. Recently the ‘Downpatrick Family of Parishes Safeguarding Committee’ was formed. Representatives from the five parishes now work together on all safeguarding matters for the entire Family of Parishes.

The next step will be a page. At present each parish have their own page. From the 14th February the five pages will amalgamate under one new page: ‘Downpatrick Family of Parishes’.

Mass Times, Funeral Notices, Bulletins, etc will all be available on the new page. If you follow our current parish page, we would ask that you move over to the page 'Downpatrick Parish’; we are currently in the process of changing the name, but progress is slow.

Our Parish of Bright will close its current page and all information will be on the 'new' page. The new page will be managed by employees from Downpatrick and Saul & Ballee, and will be updated regularly with information for the five parishes.

Prayer of Blessed John Sullivan SJ

I am sorry for having offended God.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I believe in your love for me.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I believe you love me now.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 18–25 January 2025

“For this year, 2025, the prayers and reflections for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity were prepared by the brothers and sisters of the monastic community of Bose in northern Italy. This year marks the 1,700th anniversary of the first Christian Ecumenical Council, held in Nicaea, near Constantinople in 325 AD.

This commemoration provides a unique opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the common faith of Christians, as expressed in the Creed formulated during this Council; a faith that remains alive and fruitful in our days. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2025 offers an invitation to draw on this shared heritage and to enter more deeply into the faith that unites all Christians.

The theme for the week,“Do you believe this?”(John 11: 26), takes its cue from the dialogue between Jesus and Martha when Jesus visited the home of Martha and Mary in Bethany following the death of their brother Lazarus, as narrated by the evangelist John.

Like Martha, the first generations of Christians could not remain indifferent or passive when the words of Jesus touched and searched their hearts. They earnestly sought to give a comprehensible answer to Jesus’ question, “Do you believe this?”

The Fathers of Nicaea strove to find words that would embrace the entire mystery of the incarnation and the passion, death and resurrection of their Lord. While awaiting His return, Christians around the world are called to witness together to this faith in the resurrection, which is for them the source of hope and joy, to be shared with all peoples.”
