UPDATE
As many of you know the Church roof is in desperate need of repair and with the help of the Diocese an application for a grant of £250,000 has been made to the Historic England Places of Worship fund which opened for applications in May, fingers crossed this is successful! 🤞🤞🤞

A requirement of the funding application requires a lot of information about the state of the roof, what needs to be done, a fully itemised costing etc which is all carried out by the Architect, which is not cheap! But thank you to your generous donations previously, this is helping towards the costs, already at around £22,000, and still about another £20,000 to go!

If you could help us further to fund this work going forward and help us make the Church watertight for many years to come, it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks, The PCC

So some of you may have noticed the church clock has not be ringing the hour over the past couple of weeks. We have had the clock engineers out today who made some repairs, replaced some electronics and the hourly chime has been restored. Electronics for something that used to be all mechanical!! Sign of the times I guess.

Happy Easter to you all!

I've just finished reading the book Vagabonds by Oskar Jensen, and there I found an anecdote about a man called Jack Stuart, a Georgian ballad singer. The year is 1815 and he is dying at the age of 35 following a hard and difficult life. The piece that caught my eye is below:

'Jack Stuart breathes his last. For decades he has been a celebrated and scurrilous ballad singer. So striking is his face, with its full beard, clean brow, straight nose, that he once caught the eye of sculptor John Flaxman, who preserved him in stone as a loose-trousered sailor; you can see him still in the chancel of Campsall Church, Yorkshire, where he stands, arms folded, at the left of the Yarborough memorial.'

It then goes on to describe his rather eventful funeral that included 'dancing, drinking, swearing and fighting'. It certainly must have been eventful that it is remembered two hundred years later!

The next time you're in church, take a look at the sculpture in the Chancel. Maybe at our upcoming Easter Coffee Morning 😄
