Today is St Laurence's Day.

Laurence was a Deacon (servant minister) and was arrested by the Roman Empire at a time when following Jesus was banned. His colleagues and the Pope were executed but Laurence was ordered to bring the treasures of the Church to the Governor.

He sold all the valuable objects and gave the money to those in need, then took the poor, the lame, the widows and the orphans and declared to the governor, "these are the treasures of the Church"

The governor ordered him to be burned to death on a grid iron over a fire.

Laurence reportedly said to the executioners "can you turn me over please, I'm done on this side"

So in addition to being the Patron Saint of People: those who work with open fires (cooks, bakers, brewers, textile cleaners, tanners), and those to whom fire means harm (librarians, archivists, miners, poor people), he is also the Patron Saint of comedians.

A true Saint whose care was for the poor!

If you hear the bells of St Laurence ringing this evening (Tuesday 14th July) they may sound different.

Half of the notes will sound quieter. The bells are half muffled with a leather cup.

This is done as a sign of respect and mourning and tonight they ring half muffled for Sandie, one of our team of ringers who very sadly died yesterday.

If you do hear the bells please do pray for Sandie's family and friends.

May she rest in peace.

Carcroft and Woodlands Roadworks

The direct road between Carcroft and Woodlands will be closed for just over a week starting in mid-July, to ensure that vital resurfacing works can take place.

The route will be unavailable between Saturday 18 July and Sunday 26 July, during which time there will also be disruption to certain bus services. In the meantime, access to Adwick train station will be unaffected from the Carcroft side, and diversions will be in place for other key routes.

Motorists are encouraged to please allow extra time for their journeys if they are traveling in either the Carcroft or Woodlands areas while this resurfacing is underway. We appreciate your patience while we carry out these safety essential works.
