Around 25 Leonard Cohen fans gathered last Tuesday evening for a great session on 'The Prayers of Leonard Cohen'. Robert Taylor guided us through Cohen's religious and spiritual roots, some key events in his life and five of his songs. A lively group meant there was lots of inteaction and a lot of insight!
The popularity of the event was such that we will be repeating this event (on September 20th). Hope to see you there!

Tuesday's event 'Four Fields, Five Gates' has proven extremely popular and there is only one spot left! We intend to re-run it (date to be announced). If you have been unable to book this time, please register on the link below to let us know you would be interested in a re-run. Thank you.

In the run up to the Second World War two young teachers from Oxfordshire were inspired to take on a run-down cottage not far from Dolgellau. With great energy and boundless ingenuity they set about making the place habitable and creating a haven from a world which was collapsing around them. This i...

Thanks to everyone who came along on Tuesday to hear Paula Burnett's very moving presentation about the 1894 boating disaster on the Mawddach. Another really memorable evening.

Our event next Tuesday 21June (18.00-19.15) is another intriguing local story about one man's stance for pacifism after having fought in WW1.

Our speaker is Neil Evans, head of the Harlech Historical Society and we can expect anoth memorable evening. More information and booking via our website.
Hope to see you there!

John Williams (Jackie Chips) was a merchant seamen who joined the army in 1914 and served in Gallipoli and Palestine before being seriously wounded at the First Battle of Gaza. Back home in Harlech under the influence of his friend Ianto Humphreys he gradually became in pacifist. He influenced many....

Interested in finding out more about our area local history?

We have three great events coming up:

Next Tuesday June 14 18.00-19.15

Pleasure and Peril in Snowdonia. In 1894 a group of young holidaymakers take an ill-fated rowing trip on the Mawddach. What brought them here and what went wrong?

Tuesday June 21 18.00-19.15

Jackie Chips Wars; Palestine, Gallipoli and Harlech. A soldier returns to Harlech after WW1 and becomes an avowed pacifist, urging other young men to be conscientious objectors. Two very different wars, two very different fights.

Tuesday June 28 18.00-19.15

Four Fields, Five Gates. The story of two indomitable schoolteachers who set about renovating a remote house in 1940. An unforgettable and much-loved tale which absolutely proves that "they don't make them like that any more".

Thanks to everyone who came along to John Hirst's talk on 'When the Railway Came to Dolgellau and the Coast'. John was a great speaker who really brought his subject alive with lots of stories and anecdotes connected to his theme. Not surprising that we had a full house!

Our topic this week is a connected one. Amongst the many thousands of tourists who arrived locally in the late 19th century was a group of young people who lost their lives close to Bontddu on a rowing excursion. It seemed they were almost forgotten. Determined that they wouldn't be, Paula Burnett researched their story and tells it next Tuesday June 14th 18.00-19.15. Hope you can make it along for another enjoyable, relaxing and educational evening. Book via website.

Next week: don't miss Tue June 7th 'When The Railway Came to Dolgellau and the Coast'. Talk by local historian John Hirst. To book free of charge go to.

It is hard to imagine this area before the arrival of the railway……. Most ordinary people would never have left their home towns or villages. Visitors were few and far between, arriving here via coach – an uncomfortable ride into a very remote place, and one not without danger. And yet these p...
