We're really looking forward to hosting this Devizes Arts Festival FREE FRINGE exhibition of prisoners' artwork later this week.

The opening is on Thursday at 6pm - join the Friends of Erlestoke Prison for a presentation about the prison art programmes that will including readings from an anthology of prisoners’ poems.

HMP Erlestoke and the Friends of Erlestoke Prison charity work in partnership to support prisoners with the challenges of rehabilitation and successful resettlement when they leave prison. Take time to stand and stare. Ian did, and he wasn't disappointed.

"Treat yourself to an indulgence . . . you’ll undoubtedly spot someone you know, a beloved place, something or somewhere to make you laugh, smile, weep – or even halt you with a jolt.

Gail is not shy to show warts and all either… we live in such a beautiful part of the world and her wonderful photographic eye captures so many shots that are truly stunning, worthy of any great exhibition… but she also grabs the mundane parts of everyday life that are the reality of living in a small town. For every framed shot of a church yard entrance, a shaft of light in the Ginnel, there’s the kebab shop building site, a hearse, a crowded bus."

It's nearly time! We think you'll need more than one visit to Gail's exhibition - there are so many shots of life in Devizes... and beyond... like it says!

Plus, there are words about this place and its people... and we know she has a way with them.

Join us for the exhibition in our atmospheric and beautiful building.

We are delighted to bring Gail Foster's words and images to from 18th April.

Aside from undertaking poetry commissions and publishing her own books, Gail counts among her achievements reading her poems on BBC radio and in Salisbury Cathedral, writing for and reading at Avebury on high days and holidays, honouring people at weddings and funerals, and having her ghazals included in Eastern Structures, a magazine dedicated to Asian poetry forms written in English.

‘Devizes & Beyond’ is a collection of original poems in traditional forms and digital photography inspired by life in Devizes and the occasional foray into the world outside.

The exhibition covers eight areas of life from shopping to spirituality and is a colourful and poignant snapshot of what it is to be human in this beautiful place and brief moment of time, and the physical and metaphysical journeys we take on different forms of transport and through life itself.

With a nod to conflict and the odd laugh, this cute and existential exhibition is one person’s view of what is wonderful about the world and the community we live in.
