LESSON 3: RESTORING OUR SELF-IMAGE
PRIMARY SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 2:10
“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works…”
⸻
1. We Are God’s Workmanship
Key Thought
We are not accidents, afterthoughts, or random creations. We are God’s intentional design—His workmanship, His masterpiece, created with purpose.
“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.”
Psalms 139:13-15 NLT
You are woven not assembled!
Assembled” suggests taking pre-made parts and putting them together like a machine on a factory line. It can imply something impersonal, mechanical, and standardized.
Knitting is careful, intentional, and intricate.
• Weaving involves artistry, design, and purpose.
• Both require attention to detail and a personal touch.
• Every thread has a place and contributes to the whole.
David is emphasizing that human beings are not mass-produced products. We are the result of God’s intentional craftsmanship.
The word workmanship speaks of something carefully crafted, like a masterpiece shaped with skill and intention. This means your life carries divine design and eternal purpose.
Our identity is not based on failures, achievements, appearance, or the opinions of others—but on God’s original intent for our lives.
Discussion Questions
• What does it mean to you that you are God’s workmanship and created with purpose?
• How does knowing that God intentionally created you affect the way you see yourself?
⸻
2. The Sources of a Damaged Self-Image
Key Thought
A damaged self-image is often formed through negative experiences that distort how we see ourselves.
Guilt, shame, rejection, criticism, trauma, and repeated failure can slowly reshape identity. These experiences often whisper:
• “Something is wrong with you.”
• “You will never change.”
• “This is just who you are.”
When these thoughts are left unchallenged, they become strongholds. And over time, negative thinking begins to attract negative living.
Don't let your issues define you!
Don't let satan deceive you
Only God can define you because He created you!
Discussion Questions
• What are some common experiences that can damage a person’s self-image?
• How can guilt, shame, rejection, criticism, or past mistakes affect the way we see ourselves?
⸻
3. The Power of God’s Forgiveness
Key Thought
1 John 1:9 NLT - “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”
“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out…” (Acts 3:19)
God forgave you! The power of that statement is beyond words—it changes your destination, it changes your steps, it changes your life!”
Healing begins when we fully receive God’s forgiveness—and stop allowing past sins to define our future.
In the story of the woman caught in adultery, Jesus does not deny her sin, but He also does not define her by it. Instead, He restores her identity and redirects her future: “Go and sin no more.” John 8:11
One of the greatest battles is not just receiving God’s forgiveness—but learning to forgive ourselves. Until we do, we remain mentally trapped in our old identity.
Forgiveness is not just pardon from sin—it is restoration of identity.
Discussion Questions
• Why do some people struggle to forgive themselves even after God has forgiven them?
• What lessons can we learn from the woman caught in adultery about grace and restoration?
⸻
4. Seeing Yourself Through God’s Eyes
Key Scripture: Isaiah 43:4
“Since you were precious in My sight, You have been honored, And I have loved you; Therefore I will give men for you, And people for your life.”
Isaiah 43:4 NKJV

“The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.”
Jeremiah 31:3 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/jer.31.3.NKJV
Key Thought
God does not see us through the lens of our failures but through the lens of love and redemption.
He calls us:
• Precious
• Honored
• Loved
The enemy’s strategy is always distortion—he speaks lies about worth, identity, and destiny. But God speaks truth that restores and redefines.
We must learn to anchor our identity not in what we feel, but in what God declares.
Discussion Questions
• According to Isaiah 43:4, how does God view His children?
• What lies does the enemy tell about our worth, and what truths does God speak instead?
⸻
5. The Effect of a Healthy or Unhealthy Self-Image
Key Thought
A person will never consistently live above the level of their self-image.
How we see ourselves sets the ceiling for our decisions, relationships, confidence, and spiritual growth.
An unhealthy self-image produces:
• insecurity
• fear of failure
• people-pleasing
• spiritual hesitation
But a restored self-image produces:
• confidence in God
• emotional stability
• boldness in purpose
• joy and peace
Transformation begins internally before it is seen externally.
Discussion Questions
• How does a poor self-image affect relationships, ministry, decision-making, and spiritual growth?
• What changes occur when someone begins to see themselves as God sees them?
⸻
6. Practical Steps to Restore Your Self-Image
Key Thought
Restoration is not instant—it is a process of continual renewal.
We are being reshaped as we bring our wounds, failures, and insecurities to Jesus. Through His Word and Spirit, false identities are replaced with truth.
This process includes:
• Renewing the mind with Scripture
• Choosing forgiveness over condemnation
• Consistent prayer and surrender
• Allowing the Holy Spirit to heal inner wounds
Over time, strongholds fall, and identity is realigned with God’s truth.
Discussion Questions
• What practical actions can help someone restore their self-image?
• How do prayer, God’s Word, forgiveness, and the Holy Spirit contribute to healing and restoration?
⸻
CLOSING REFLECTION
“If you truly believed God’s view of you today, what is one area of your life that would change?”
