St. Augustine's Church - Londonderry

St. Augustine's Church - Londonderry St Augustine’s Church — a place of peace, prayer, and presence in the heart of historic Derry~Londonderry. As this is the the 1500th Anniversary for St.

Columba we are looking forward to the celebrations on 9th June 2021. In 1600 the ancient abbey church founded by Columba in 546 was repaired for use by the settlers. In 1633 St. Columb's Cathedral was built and the congregation moved from the "wee church". The church was used by the Presbyterians during the Great Siege in 1689. In 1760 the buildings were rebuilt as a Chapel of Ease. The present St

. Augustine's church building was rebuilt and consecrated by Bishop Alexander in 1872. The church is in a good state of repair and was privileged to receive funding to replace the roof in 2017. Music is an important part of our worship with an organ and piano both used to praise God. There is a modern sound system which can be controlled by an iPad or the sound desk with various types of radio, hand-held and standing microphones which are used at our church services, for visiting musicians in our summer concerts and for outside hire of the church. The age of our graveyard is unknown but it is recorded in the Irish Annals that one of the last High Kings of Ireland was "honourably interred" at the Dub Regles in 1196. The graves date from the early 1600s and the Carrec stone which is the oldest stone was believed to have been embedded in the church of 1603. There is a map of the graveyard detailing names and location of gravestones beside the church entrance.
