From a friend's group of churches in Staffordshire

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Our Children’s Policy at URC churches of North Staffordshire.

We wanted to make sure everyone is aware of our policy regarding children in church:
If your kids are loud, please still come to church.
If you’re running late because getting everyone out the door was a battle, please still come to church.
If your toddler won’t sit still, please still come to church.
If your baby needs to eat, please still come to church.
If your child asks questions at the least convenient time, please still come to church.
If someone cries, drops a toy, needs a snack, or has to make their third trip to the bathroom, please still come to church.
If your child doesn’t know all the words, all the prayers, or exactly when to sit and stand, please still come to church.
If you feel like you spent the entire service managing your children and heard approximately 12% of the sermon, please still come to church.
If Sunday morning feels messy instead of peaceful, please still come to church.
If you’re worried your children are distracting the people around you, please still come to church.

Because children do not learn how to be part of the Church by staying home until they can sit quietly.

They learn by being here.
They learn the hymns by hearing us sing them.
They learn the prayers by hearing us pray them.
They learn to worship by watching us worship.
They learn that church is home because we make room for them here.

The wiggles, whispers, dropped crayons, crying babies, and little voices are not interruptions to the life of the Church.

They are evidence that the Church is alive.

So bring the babies. Bring the toddlers. Bring the big kids. Come late. Sit in the back. Sit in the front. Step out when you need to and come right back in.

Just come.
Children are not simply the future of the Church. They are part of the Church right now.
And at the URC churches of North Staffordshire, there is a place for them here.

Times like these
(based on the tune "Woodlands" Tell out my soul"

In times like these, we pray that your will is done.
Your message reaching out to set us free
You Kingdom come to visit every heart
And maybe we were made for times like these

Your world is hurt, bring peace to a world at war
Use us to foster here more acts of peace
Breathe into us a way to show love more
And maybe we were made for times like these

We see a need for where we can shine your light
Where our response can be to hear the pleas
And where we can to put injustice right
And maybe we were made for times like these

We welcome love to minister hope to all
To move towards a world that feels at ease
And may we answer when we hear you call
That maybe we were made for times like these

A darkness thank you
(One of those ones that wakes you up at 3am and writes itself)
Based on the hymn "There's a quiet understanding"

In the darkness
In the silence
When the chaos
Is around you
Come to open
Arms that found you
When you could not find your way

Love is precious
Hope is always
Waiting out there
Right before you
Don't been frightened
See the light on
Find the courage in your soul

God has heard your
Cries for mercy
Felt your heartache
Knows your sorrow
And tomorrow
Love will hold you
God will never let you go

When lament is
All your heart sings
When you're broken
And the pain stings
Just remember
Words eternal
God knew you
Before your birth

In this stillness
Feel the comfort
Of a Love that
Knows your longing
You belong in
Arms that hold you
When all others let you down

Here is hope and
Understanding
You are standing
In a safe place
Holy ground is
All around you
You are precious
In God's sight

Endurance
from Parkstone URC, Dorset
(based on the tune of 'Thornbury' Thy hand, O God, has guided)

Your love endures for ever
Your mercy always stay sure
We look to you for guidance
We seek a faith that endures
You shower us with you blessings
You call us to follow you
You dwell in our lives confessing
One way, one life, one truth

You challenge us with mission
With visions of how to live
With lives built on compassion
With hearts that beat to forgive
You welcome us to your family
Invite us in close to you
A church always reaching outward
One life, one way, one truth

You build up our endurance
The more we learn to trust you
You bless us with assurance
That all you give us is true
You tenderly hold us in your grace
You listen to what we pray
You're moving among us in this place
One life, one truth, one way

Your arms are here to hold us
Your spirit dwelling inside
Your Gospel words have taught us
How closely you will abide
Your message is one of justice here
Forgiveness is how you save
So all can approach you without fear
One truth, one life, one way

“One thing we can be fairly sure from this Psalm is that God's love lasts forever…This feels fine when the Psalm tells us that God created the universe and gives good things but it feels more problematic when God 'smites' our enemies.” Sam Goodman explores Psalm 136 in today’s Daily Devotion.

This miracle
(based on the tune of 'Give thanks with a grateful heart')

Your hands calm my deepest fears
Your love shows me you are near
You're here and your moving through my life with your grace
Your words soothe and challenge me
Your hope sets my spirit free
You're here and your sanctuary rests now in this place

So now you invite me to be still
Let my emptiness be filled
By the way your presence here comforts me
And here is the place where I should be
Where your love can set me free
Where your tenderness feels peacefully near

A sanctuary triptych
(using the tune from the Taizé song 'O Lord hear my prayer')

Be still, know God's love
Stay still, feel the care
In this place, come in prayer
There's no need for words
Our prayers can be heard
Come a rest here a while

This place holds us safe
This sanctuary holds
Space for all, those who call
Love moves among us
God's grace lifts us up
Hope is offered to all

Be prayerfully here
And let go of fear
Let God's arms bring us calm
Relinquish the doubts
And let love flow out
Feel how mercy flows in
