Reading for the day: 2Tim. 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Prayer: Our Father in Heaven above, speak to us. You have, by your Spirit, breathed out all scripture, not only to make us wise for salvation through Jesus Christ, but to transform all of life so that it can be lived rightly under and for you. So plant those very words into our minds and souls that they spring to our thinking in every moment – the right truths for each occasion. Would it become an instinct, as it was for Jesus, to cite the right verse for the right moment, and live by it. Amen.

Reading for the day: 2Tim. 2:24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, 25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance…

Prayer: Most Holy and Patient God, who endures the evil of this world for the sake of the few that you are rescuing in Christ Jesus – grant to all your pastors, leaders and teachers a measure of your own patience and kindness. May they shepherd your people and correct their enemies with such grace-filled gentleness that even their opponents may see something of your Spirit’s work in their meek hearts. Grant this, we pray, in the hope that all may repent and turn to the Lord Jesus Christ, whom we all long to be like, and in whose name we pray. Amen.

Reading for the day: 2Tim. 1:7 …for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God…

Prayer: Most Holy God, who rules from the eternal glory and has granted us the presence of your Spirit to call us out of this decaying world and into a better one – grant to us strength and courage, power and self-control. May we, as citizens of a better country, not be frightened by the things of this life, but trust ourselves entirely into your care, knowing that our saviour has abolished death and brought us life and immortality. Amen.

Reading for the day: 1Tim. 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.

Prayer: Generous God, who has given us all things and granted us our own path to walk, which brings us closer to you and glorifies your name for our good – by your Spirit, help us to be godly and content. So often we see money as a solution to our discontent, to bypass your will for us, and yet it is so often a trap to us, promising much and yet delivering little when it could be used to help others. In short, give us the mind of Christ when it comes to this life and its many temptations. Amen.

Reading for the day: 1Tim. 5:17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honour, especially those who labour in preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The labourer deserves his wages.”

Prayer: Great God, who has spoken through the prophets, the apostles, and even through Gentile converts like Luke – thank you for this reminder in Paul’s letter to Timothy that Jesus’ words in Luke’s gospel were already accepted as holy scripture in Paul’s time, while the very hearers of Jesus’ own words were alive. May we listen to the words you have spoken, of honouring our servant-leaders and providing for the weakest in our congregations, with wisdom and with zeal. All for the glory of Jesus and the love of his church, we pray. Amen.

Reading for the day: 1Tim. 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons … 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

Prayer: Lord God, who has granted us over many years godly teachers in the likeness of Timothy who hold out your word in truth and preserve us from evil doctrines that would swallow us up in man-made rules and grand myths, we ask you to preserve us and grant us pastors and deacons who serve you with true hearts. Grant us your Spirit to discern falsehood and listen to those who teach your word faithfully. We ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.

Reading for the day: 1Tim. 3:16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:
He was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory.

Prayer: Father God, who called and created the church, who sent your Son to redeem us and who now lives among your church by your Holy Spirit – hear our prayer for your people. Grant them shepherds and servers, overseers and deacons, who exhibit increasingly more of the godliness of Jesus Christ himself. Thank you for his example, given in his life and body, of how to manifest the truly spiritual life in our physical world. Amen.

Reading for the day: 1Tim. 2:1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

Prayer: God our Saviour, who desires all to be saved by knowing your Son – the only mediator who can take our sin and bring us back to your presence, undoing all the damage that Adam did – we do indeed lift up holy hands in prayer to you. We ask you, Lord of all, to grant us governments that create such societies as allow your people to live quiet and godly lives, testifying to the world around them of a better hope. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Reading for the day: 1Tim. 1:16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.

Prayer: Most gracious God, who has shown such long-suffering kindness and mercy to all mankind over so many thousands of years – teach us, we pray, to be patient with all people and in all prayer as Christ is patient. May Jesus’ example with Paul not only inspire us to consider all people as within reach of his power to save, but may his forbearance and perseverance with Paul also be something that we aspire to, by your Spirit. Amen.
