Today we said goodbye to Derby Unity after 5 years of being together.

When we first started it was an adventure. Could we actually create a space that truly welcomed people of all faiths and especially those with no faith? Could we create a vision for the 21st Century where people of could be in peaceful and loving community with those they may disagree with?

Well yes, we did all those thing and more. These adapted words by

Dana Worsnop say everything about the kind of Community that Derby Unity became:

A community where people didn’t have to think like everyone else to belong and be loved.

A community who valued compassion, justice, love and truth, though they had different thoughts and opinions about all sorts of things.

A community where people had many names and no name at all for that which is sacred and holy.

A community who encouraged people to feel their inter-connection with all existence and let it guide their footfall upon the earth.

A community of people who inspired one another to follow the call of their heart and find a way of being that reflected their true self more fully

A community of people who pledged to be honest, engaged and kind

A community of people who gave of themselves, who shared their hearts and minds and gifts.

In short, Derby Unity created an amazing community, our journey was often warm and generous, sometimes, challenging, but almost always an adventure.

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this wonder filled and wonderful community over the last 5 years.

This Morning we remembered the golden rule that, if we all followed, could help create a sustaining peace in our world:

“That which is hateful to you, do not do to another.”
― Rabbi Hillel

However, this is not as easy to do as it sounds. In this film, Noam Chomsky tells us: we all know this but we think it applies to others and not ourselves.

Today we were reminded that even though we may all have broken this rule (perhaps even a 1000 times)- we can always come, yet again come and remember that we are connected to each other and to the earth on which we live.

Thank you to Sue and Nansy for leading us in song and for reminding us that, not only do we have the whole world in our hands but also a song of love in our hearts.
