As the Minister of Derby Inclusive Fellowship, I am saddened, disappointed, and deeply concerned by reports that LGBTQ+ books, displays, and Pride-related materials are being removed from Staffordshire's libraries.

Libraries are places of learning, discovery, and community. They are places where people encounter new ideas, broaden their understanding of the world, and sometimes find themselves reflected in the pages of a book for the very first time.

For many LGBTQ+ people, books have provided hope, reassurance, and belonging. They have helped us understand our own stories and reminded us that we are not alone. They have preserved our history, celebrated our achievements, and documented the struggles and sacrifices of those who came before us.

When LGBTQ+ books are removed from displays or shelves, it sends a troubling message. It suggests that some stories are less worthy of being seen, shared, and celebrated than others. That is not the message our public libraries should be sending.

As a Christian minister, I believe that every person is created with dignity and worth. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I know how important visibility and representation can be. We cannot allow fear, prejudice, or political pressure to erase the stories of an entire community.

However, our response should not simply be anger. It should also be community.

So I would like to invite everyone to take part in a simple act of visibility and solidarity.

Recommend the books that helped you feel seen.
Recommend the stories that changed your perspective.
Recommend the authors whose voices deserve to be heard.

If books are removed from displays, we will help one another find them.

If stories are pushed aside, we will continue sharing them.

If visibility is reduced in one place, we will create visibility in another.

Because our history matters.
Because our stories matter.
Because every person deserves to see themselves reflected in literature, history, and community.

Today, the MCC Denomination pauses in profound sorrow, fierce love, and sacred remembrance as we mark the anniversary of the Pulse nightclub tragedy.

Ten years ago, a space of sanctuary, joy, and authentic self-expression for the LGBTQ+ community, especially our Latinx siblings, was shattered by an act of horrific violence. Today, we hold the 49 beautiful souls who were lost close to our hearts. We pray for their families, the survivors who carry the physical and emotional scars, and the entire Orlando community.

As a church born out of the struggle for LGBTQ+ liberation, MCC knows that our response to hate must always be an abundance of love and an unwavering commitment to justice. We refuse to let fear silence our joy. We refuse to let hatred dim our light.
