🎶 Rehearsals are well underway at Derby Cathedral as our Boy Choristers prepare to join Sinfonia Viva for Vaughan Williams’ magnificent Five Mystical Songs this Saturday evening.

The Cathedral Choir is delighted to be collaborating with Sinfonia Viva, conductor Karen Ní Bhroin and baritone Jolyon Loy in a programme celebrating some of the finest English music ever written, culminating in Vaughan Williams’ deeply moving masterpiece. 

Alongside the soaring beauty of The Lark Ascending, featuring violinist Sophie Rosa, the concert includes music by Purcell, Elgar, Tom Coult and Bridge. 

Join the Cathedral Choir, Sinfonia Viva and a stellar line-up of musicians on Saturday at 7.00pm for an unforgettable celebration of Vaughan Williams and the English musical tradition.

Join us at Derby Cathedral on Sunday 28 June for a special Book Tour Event with Tim Popple, author of Evensong – Notes from the Choir.

📖 Tim will share insights from the book, read an extract, answer audience questions, sign books, and there’ll even be merch available on the night!

⛪ The event is preceded by Choral Evensong at 5.15pm sung by Derby Cathedral Choir, featuring music by Ives, Walton, Leighton and Duruflé.

Hosted at St Oswald’s, Ashbourne ⛪️, it promises to be a fantastic celebration of choral music, with works by Stanford, Balfour Gardiner and Amy Beach — a rich and uplifting feast for singers and listeners alike ✨

On Saturday, we were delighted to welcome our friends from the University of Derby Choir, Air Arts, Sinfonia Viva and the Staff Wellbeing Choir from the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton, who joined the Cathedral Choir for the Florence Nightingale Service: Home, Health and Hope.

The final part of the service featured the world premiere of Heal My Hope, part of a new musical work by Rosie Rutherford and Jamie Rutherford, which powerfully portrays the experience of musicians working in hospitals. Within the music, the beep of a dialysis machine can be heard, while the texture gradually builds to reflect the growing sense of hope that music can bring to patients.

We look forward to recording this piece, alongside the others in this set, in June.

It was a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with so many of our valued partners.
