Anyone walking through Derby City Centre, up St Peter’s Street, will no doubt be saddened at the sight of people struggling with addiction and homelessness, gathering on the benches outside St Peter’s Church. For a number of years, the church hosted a weekly meal, but more and more had a yearning to bring about long-term change in people’s lives and so we set up the Inside Out Project for ex-prisoners/addicts. The project runs a house for 3 men, giving them a drug-free living environment, a mentoring programme and a supportive community around them. 30+ men have since come through the project. The outcomes differ – some revert to old ways, some return to rehab. but others move to independent accommodation, jobs and renewed relationships with family and friends. Mentors come from a number of churches across Derbyshire.
Covid struck the project badly, not least the £350 /week payable to the house owner FHE for each empty room. We have now re-launched the project. We have a new project worker, Edmund Thompson, and have been gifted a house. Funding for the project is being sort to ensure long term survival and growth- albeit some bids are turned down because we are a Christian organisation. The project currently costs £1,250 per month and is massively subsidised by St Peter’s.
We are therefore appealing to the churches of Derby to support this project. Initially we ask you to share this information with your church members. Edmund and another member of the project from St Peter’s are willing to come and talk to your PCC or congregation.
There are a number of ways to help:
• Pray for the project, for Edmund, the mentors and the mentees
• Train as a mentor. Do contact Edmund on the email below to learn more about this role.
• Give funds: either in the form of regular giving to cover the needs of the project or one-off support to help with the setting up of the house.
