We invite you to join in Sunday's prayer:
O God,
protector of those who hope in you,
without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy,
enfold us in your gracious care and mercy,
that with you as our ruler and guide,
we may use wisely the gifts of this passing world
and fix our hearts even now on those which last for ever.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever

Reflection on today's Gospel:
(Lk.10. 38 - 42)

We move from the violent and dramatic of last week’s Gospel to the domestic, the constant theme is hospitality to the traveller. When we help others we satisfy their needs, not ours. It was the need of Jesus to proclaim God’s Word which was essential, not any physical needs he may have had. Our kindness should be to help people grow and mature. This can only be done if we are more open to their needs than ours. As with last Sunday’s Gospel we are called to look at our own life, and see how we help others to develop.

We invite you to join in Sunday's prayer:
Show favour to your servants, O Lord,
and shower upon us the gifts of your grace,
that, eager in faith, in hope, and in love,
we may always be watchful in keeping your commandments.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

We invite you to join in Sunday's prayer:
O God,
you show the light of your truth to those who stray,
that they may return to the right path.
Grant that all who profess the Christian faith
may reject whatever is contrary to the gospel
and follow the way that leads to you.
We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

Reflection on today's Gospel:
(Lk.10. 25 - 37)

If we are in trouble we expect our family or group to look after us, “we protect our own” is the usual phrase. In Jesus’ story the man is not looked after by “his own”. Note that the man is going down from the heights of Jerusalem (2500 ft. above sea level) to Jericho (800 ft. below sea level) He was going down to the depths. He was helped from the depths by one who was a stranger, and ignored by “his own.” Do we help just “our own” or look to see those really in need?

Reflection on today's Gospel:
(Lk.10. 1 – 12, 17 – 20)

Note that Jesus prepares the 72 for conflict. They have to overcome evil, but not by violence. (This anticipates the death and resurrection of Jesus.) They are to proclaim the Kingdom of God: the place where God is, the place of peace and nourishment, the place where conflict is ended through the triumph of Jesus. We too are to announce the peace and the Kingdom of God, The more we achieve peace the closer we are to that Kingdom.

We invite you to join in Sunday's prayer:
God of power,
who raised up a fallen world
through the lowliness of your Son,
grant to your faithful people a holy joy,
so that those whom you have rescued from the slavery of sin
may delight in the happiness that never ends.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

Reflection on today's Gospel:
(Lk. 9. 51 - 62)
This gospel passage is the start of Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem (it takes us the next 20 weeks). Jesus calls us to follow him in the freedom of the children of God. How we respond to his call is up to us. We begin each day anew, putting our hand to the plough as Jesus calls us. If we ‘looked back’ yesterday we can begin this day by putting our trust in the love and mercy of Jesus, and trying to be faithful to his love for the next twenty-four hours, for his Spirit is always with us.

We invite you to join in Sunday's prayer:
Merciful God,
you willed that by the grace of adoption
we should become children of light;
grant that we not be cloaked in the darkness of error
but rather stand forth in the splendour of truth.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

We invite you to join in Sunday's prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ,
in this most wonderful sacrament
you have left us the memorial of your passion;
deepen our reverence for the mystery of your body and blood,
that we may experience within us the fruit of your redemption.
You live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

Reflection on today's Gospel:
(Lk. 9. 11 - 17)
The gospel anticipates the Last Supper, and also looks forward to the heavenly banquet. Whenever we attend Mass we too unite different times: this miracle in the Gospel, the Last Supper, the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, the eternal banquet of heaven, and our own participation in the Mass at a particular moment. Whether we are worried or happy, our own reality is taken to the past events and the anticipation of the future, we are united to the love of God the Father, shown in the death and resurrection of Jesus, and shared through the Holy Spirit as we receive Holy Communion.
