Sixth Week of Lent – Reflection by Revd Caroline Ainger, Mission Area Lead, Liverpool Plus and District Deputy Chair
See, What a Morning – Singing the Faith 309
I lost my voice once. Unfortunately it happened at a very inconvenient time. It coincided with my arrival in India for a two month placement as part of my ministerial training. I was there to preach in Churches, to teach in Kolkata theological college, to talk with people in local gender justice projects. Perhaps God was humbling me, but I couldn’t help feeling I would be letting everyone down.
"The voice that spans the years,
speaking life, stirring hope, bringing peace to us,
will sound till he appears,
for he lives: Christ is risen from the dead!"
These words come from the worship song ‘See, what a morning, gloriously bright,’ by Stuart Townsend and Keith Getty. They remind me in my darkest moments that God is not silent or detached from us. God is with us and God is for us.
This is the message of the Cross and the Empty tomb; that the God of love brings life where all hope had been lost. And the way this is vividly described in the song, almost with cinematic imagery, immediately places us at the scene. We are invited into the story to encounter the one who calls us by our name, who has defeated sin, shattered death, and secured eternal life for us. What is being depicted isn’t simply a historical event, but a living reality and one which is offered to each and every person.
‘Death is defeated, life is won’ captures the heart of the gospel message in a simple yet profound way. These words ask us to reflect on the cost of Jesus’ victory: the Cross. The joy of resurrection life cannot be separated from the suffering and self-giving love of Good Friday. This contrast deepens our sense of wonder, awe and gratitude.
The song also points us forward. Because Christ is alive, there is a future hope that cannot be shaken. Fear, uncertainty, and even death itself no longer have the final word. This gives us the courage and the confidence to live our lives with bold faith, knowing that the same power that raised Christ is at work in us and through us, ‘speaking life, stirring hope, bringing peace.’
Wonder:
Do I live with the confidence and hope that comes from knowing death is defeated?
Where in my life do I need to experience the “light” of Christ overcoming darkness?
How can I reflect the joy and victory of Jesus’ in my daily life?
In what ways is Jesus calling me by name to follow him more closely?
Prayer:
Jesus, friend and saviour, thank you for the new life you have won for me. Shine your light into my life and fill me with your peace and courage. Teach me to walk in the power of your crucified and risen life this day and every day.
Amen.
