Good afternoon,
I hope you are well.
Firstly, Superintendent Jones very much appreciated the opportunity to meet earlier in the week at the peace walk.
I am writing in light of two recent incidents elsewhere in the country which you will no doubt be aware of and which may understandably cause concern amongst you and the wider local Muslim community. These are the reported disruption of an alleged extreme right-wing plot targeting the UK Ijtima gathering in Suffolk, and the recent arrest and charge of a 14-year-old who is alleged to have been preparing attacks against mosques in Sutton.
Both matters are being investigated by specialist officers from Counter Terrorism Policing. While the incidents are understandably concerning, there is currently nothing to indicate any connection to Bexley or our local communities.
Nevertheless, I recognise that incidents of this nature can have a significant impact on feelings of safety and reassurance. With that in mind, I have directed our local Neighbourhood Policing Teams to undertake increased high-visibility patrols in the vicinity of the Islamic Centre over the coming days, particularly during periods of higher attendance such as Friday prayers.
These patrols will be carried out by local Bexley officers, and I hope their presence will provide reassurance to you, and all those attending during what may be an unsettling time for many.
Please be assured that we will continue to monitor the situation closely and maintain close engagement with community leaders. Should you have any concerns, or if there is anything further we can do to support you and your community, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind Regards
Jimmy
