Wonderful news. All the very best Sean.

Bishop Nick is pleased to announce the appointment of the Rev Sean McEwen as Priest-in-Charge of St Columba’s, Largs initially for three years. His licensing will take place on Wednesday, 29th July 2026 at 7pm, the Feast of Martha and Mary of Bethany (white stole).

Sean says, “I am honoured and deeply grateful to be called to serve the wonderful community of St Columba’s, Largs. I look forward to discerning together how God is at work among us, as we grow in prayer, deepen our common life, and bear witness to the risen Christ in the world. I am grateful to the vestry, Dean Reuben, and Bishop Nick for their thoughtfulness and welcome in this process, and I look forward to joining in the life of the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway and the Scottish Episcopal Church.”

Bishop Nick says, “I am really delighted to welcome Father Sean to the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway, and to St Columba’s, Largs. It is a joy to receive someone from another part of the Anglican Communion (Diocese of East Tennessee), bringing fresh experience, new perspectives, and a deep commitment to prayer, community and mission. I know that Sean and Lance will find a warm home among us, and I am sure we will have much to learn from one another as this new chapter begins.”

Please pray for Sean and his husband Lance as they prepare to move from the USA in order to come and live and work here in Scotland in the coming months.

The Rev Philip Blackledge has been giving the early morning Prayer for the Day on BBC Radio 4 this week, and today’s broadcast was headed ‘Unremitting joy’.

“For many of us, Easter seems a long time ago now,” said the Rector of Holy Trinity Melrose. “The eggs are all eaten and the subsequent diets have begun, but until next Thursday which is the feast of the Ascension, the church is still celebrating the Easter season – notoriously known as the 'forty days of unremitting joy'. And at this stage, the thirty-second of forty, being unremittingly joyful can feel a stretch!

“We like to think of joy as a gift that comes down from heaven, but like many gifts it can take nurturing, supporting.

“There’s an old joke about a priest walking past a beautiful garden, and remarks to the gardener: ‘Isn’t God’s creation wonderful?’ The gardener replies: 'Aye, but you should have seen the mess he made of it before I turned up.’ Every gift we are given from God, if it is truly worth something, requires not just our gratitude, but our participation.

“One of the things I do every Easter season is re-read the Acts of the Apostles. They really teach us how to be Good News people. They never gave up being full of happiness, and that was sometimes hard won – they endured beatings, imprisonment, even ex*****on. But they knew that joy was a gift that would never leave them, if they never left it. And through them the world changed.

“God of joy, we thank you for that gift of happiness which you give us to grow into. May we strive for the fuller joys of heaven, may we never let go of the hope of better days. May we be joyous participants in the building of your Kingdom, that we and those who come after us may see the glorious fruits of your gifts and our labour. Amen.“
