A letter from our Chaplain.
Dear Member of our Parish.
On 14th of June the Church is launching our giving week where we ask members of our parish to make a donation to the running costs of the church. Parish churches have long been a feature of our towns and villages, but unfortunately with reductions in numbers of people attending, there is a corresponding reduction in our monthly income. This places the long-term future of the church in jeopardy, as without donations and offerings we cannot continue to function.
Just as the cost of living crisis has hit many individuals hard, it has also hit the church, especially when it comes to utility costs for running our buildings. For example, in December our electricity for heating our Newtongrange building for use on a Sunday was well over £1000 for one month. Currently the money we receive each month through offerings does not match our expenditure.
So if you enjoy having the church as part of your village then I would urge you to consider making a donation to us during our giving week. Your gift will go towards our on-going costs and will ensure that the church is there to support our community going forward.
The church is not just a Sunday thing, we are a part of your community and have various outreach that run throughout the week. These activities provide both practical and spiritual support, friendship and comfort to anyone who wishes it.
Throughout the week we will share the many ways in which you can give to us during our giving week, as well as how to gift aid your donation to ensure we get the maximum from it. Our church currently survives through the extremely generous attitude of those who attend week in week out, giving both of time and money, and we want to say a huge thank you to all of these people! It may seem cheeky to ask those who already give, to give more, however this is the situation that we find ourselves in.
We need more people to support their local church, because without it then in the future there will be no local church. Please consider giving us a donation during the week of giving, but also consider supporting us by attending our events and become part of the worshipping community. Please consider this a personal invitation to come along and see what it is we do.
With my best wishes,
Rev Christopher Watt
