Nichiren Shu Buddhist Temple of UK

Nichiren Shu Buddhist Temple of UK The Nichiren Shu Buddhist Temple of UK is located in Dagenham, Essex and is part of the Nichiren Shū School (日蓮宗) of Buddhism. The Head Minister is Rev.

Kanto Tsukamoto. Nichiren Shu is a confederation of lineages from Nichiren Shonin’s major disciples. The Head Temple of Nichiren Shu is Kuon-ji on Mt. Minobu, Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan; where Nichiren Shonin spent the last eight years of his life. We believe that the Buddha is eternal as found in the teachings of the Lotus Sutra, and that Buddhism is available and applicable to all people in a

ny time period. We believe that Nichiren Shonin was the messenger of the Buddha who has guided us in cultivating our Buddha nature, a quality inherent in all beings. The path to true liberation and happiness is found and discovered through a deep level of faith in the Buddha’s message. The primary practice of Nichiren Shu is chanting the Odaimoku (sacred title), "Namu Myoho Renge Kyo". The Odaimoku expresses the essence of the teachings of the Lotus Sutra and by chanting it we can establish a way of life consonant with the eternal truths preached by the Buddha. We are able to enter into complete enlightenment by the merits transferred to us from the eternal practice of the Buddha.

We celebrated Rikkyō Kaishū-e (立教開宗会), commemorating the day when Nichiren Shōnin first proclaimed Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō at Seichō-ji Temple on April 28th 1253. This moment marks the establishment of his teaching and our school, Nichiren Shū, affirming that the essence of the Lotus Sūtra is accessible to all people, especially in this age of confusion and suffering. Despite strong opposition, Nichiren Shōnin courageously shared this teaching out of deep compassion for all beings.

By chanting Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō and living with sincerity, courage, and compassion, we carry forward Nichiren Shōnin’s vow to lead all beings toward awakening and to contribute to peace in our world.

Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō.

Hello everyone,

We would like to share a selection of photos from Japan.

Kangyō Hosshi entered Seichōji (清澄寺) on March 26 and successfully completed the Docho (度牒) Ceremony on March 27, accompanied by his master, Tsukamoto Shōnin, the Chief Priest of our temple, as well as his mother.

Following this, they visited several temples in the Seichōji area, including Tanjōji (誕生寺), Kyōninji (鏡忍寺), and Ryōshingaku (両親閣). They then, walking on the foot steps of Nichiren Shōnin, traveled to Kamakura to visit Ankokuronji (安國論寺), Ryūkōji (龍口寺), and Myōhōji (妙法寺). Finally, they paid their respects at the grave of Nichiren Shōnin, reporting the successful completion of the Docho ceremony. Their journey continued with visits to many significant sites on Mount Minobu and throughout the surrounding area.

During their time at Minobu, Kangyō Hosshi and his master, Tsukamoto Shōnin, were also granted a private audience with His Holiness Nichiyū Mochida Hossu Geika (日勇持田法主猊下), the 93 Abbot of Minobusan Kuonji (身延山久遠寺).

They then traveled to Kyūshū to undertake further practice at Zenryūin (善立院) in Fukuoka Prefecture, before continuing on to Saga Prefecture. Along the way, they stopped at Honbutsuji (本佛寺), a large and beautiful temple in Fukuoka, their YouTube channel in very active.

In Saga, they formally reported Kangyō Hosshi’s completion of the Docho ceremony before the altar of Enkyōji (圓教寺), the home temple of Tsukamoto Shōnin. They also visited nearby Matsuozan Kōshōji (松尾山光勝寺) and other sites connected to Nisshin Shōnin (日親上人).

This region is rich in legends surrounding Nisshin Shōnin. The faith of Nichiren Shū Buddhism remains vibrant there, visibly present everywhere.

May the teachings of the Lotus Sūtra and the practice of chanting Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō spread all around the world.

Today we joyfully celebrate Shūso Gōtan-e (宗祖降誕会) , the sacred birth anniversary of our Founder, Nichiren Shōnin the Great Bodhisattva🌸

Born on February 16, 1222, in Awa Province (present-day Chiba Prefecture), Nichiren Shōnin emerged during a turbulent period in Japan’s history. From a young age, he sought the true teaching that could bring peace and liberation to all people. After deep study and reflection, he declared the Lotus Sutra to be the ultimate expression of the Buddha’s enlightenment and dedicated his life to spreading the practice of chanting Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō.

Nichiren Shōnin’s life was marked by courage and unwavering conviction. He faced exile, persecution, and hardship, yet never abandoned his vow to uphold and propagate the Dharma. His compassion was not passive but active, bold, and grounded in the belief that every person possesses the Buddha-nature and the capacity for enlightenment in this very lifetime.

Shūso Gōtan-e is more than a celebration of a historical birth. It is a profound reminder of our own potential and responsibility. It calls us to renew our faith, strengthen our practice, and live with the same fearless determination to create peace within ourselves and in society.

Happy Bodhi Day to all!

Today we had the honour of welcoming our temple’s High Priest, Tsukamoto Shōnin, who conducted the Bodhi Day, Jōdō-e (成道会) ceremony online from Japan. Thank you to everyone who joined us as we came together to commemorate the awakening of Shakyamuni Buddha.

Born Siddhartha Gautama, the Prince of King Śuddhodana of Kapilavastu in Central India, having observed aging, sickness, death, and that all conditioned things are impermanent, he sought to understand and be free from suffering. One day, when he was 19 years old he left his home to make great efforts in seeking the Way by visiting spiritual sages and taking up ascetic practices for twelve years. He came to understand however that these methods could not resolve the problem of impermanence and suffering and reconsidering, he sat under a peepal tree (the Bodhi Tree) at Uruvelā near Bodhgayā by the bank of the Nairañjanā River to meditate and enter samādhi.

He was able to overcome various forms of temptation and intimidation arising in his mind to hinder his efforts. He considered the four noble truths, the eightfold path, and dependent origination both backwards and forwards, gaining a deep clarity into the nature of being and all phenomena. On the dawn of December 8th at the first light of the morning star he attained complete perfect awakening, becoming the “Buddha” (one who is awake to the truth).

May all beings be inspired by the Buddha’s example, develop the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha and the other virtuous qualities of enlightenment, and themselves become awakened.

Thank you very much to those who attended the Komatsubara Persecution ceremony today.

If you have a Statue of Nichiren Shōnin, please put a cotton hat on head of Nichiren Shōnin 🙏

"On the 11th day of the 11th month this year, on the thoroughfare of Matsubara in Tojo, Awa Province, about four to six o’clock in the afternoon, hundreds of Nenbutsu followers ambushed me, I was accompanied by about ten people, of whom only three or four were strong enough to fight. Arrows shot by Nenbutsu followers were falling like rain, and their swords were attacking us like lightning. One of my disciples was killed at the spot and two others were seriously wounded. I also was hit and wounded, and faced mortal danger, but somehow I escaped death and am still alive today. My faith in the Lotus Sutra has been strengthened as I experienced persecutions such as this. "

Daily Dharma 27th September!

“Therefore, anyone who has wisdom should copy this sūtra with all his heart, cause others to copy it, and also keep, read and recite it, memorize it correctly, and act according to it.”

The Buddha declares this to Universal-Sage Bodhisattva in Chapter Twenty-Eight of the Lotus Sūtra.

It is important to remember that early in the sūtra, the Buddha explained that he teaches only Bodhisattvas, beings who exist for the benefit of all beings.

Our practice of the Lotus Sūtra is not just for ourselves. When we use it to lead others to enlightenment, we create the cause for our own enlightenment.
