Did you know that many headstones - even those that look beyond repair - can be beautifully restored?

At Mossfords, our restoration service includes:

✅ Professional deep cleaning of weathered stone
✅ Removal of moss, lichen, and biological growth
✅ Re-cutting of faded or worn inscriptions
✅ Structural repairs and professional re-setting
✅ Protective conservation treatments

Whether it's a memorial in Panteg Cemetery that's weathered through decades of South Wales winters, a Victorian grave in one of Torfaen's historic churchyards, or a family stone that simply hasn't been tended for years - there is nearly always more that can be done than families expect.

If you'd like us to assess a memorial, we offer a no-obligation consultation. One visit from us could mean the difference between a forgotten stone and a fitting tribute that endures for generations.

As the hillsides around Cwmbran and the Eastern Valley begin to brighten again - flowers breaking through luscious green fields, lambs on Mynydd Maen, blossom in the parks - it's natural to think of those who loved this landscape.

Summer is often when families return to a memorial after the winter and spring months, or when the thought of creating a lasting tribute finally feels possible.

At Mossfords, we work at your pace. There's no rush, no pressure - only honest guidance, skilled craftsmanship, and a genuine desire to help you create something that truly honours the life of someone you loved.

Here when you need us 🌸 No appointment needed.

In over 200 years of creating memorials across South Wales, we've never made two that are exactly the same.

Some are clean and classic - polished black granite, gold lettering, a simple cross. Others are something more personal: a carved daffodil, a rugby ball, a favourite bird, a line from a Welsh hymn.

One family recently asked us for a memorial with an intricate engraving of the Monmouthshire Canal - a nod to a grandfather who had spent his whole life working its locks.

That stone will tell his story for as long as it stands.

What would you want a memorial to say about you? We'd genuinely love to know 💬

The Canal, the Ironworks, and the Town That Built Itself

Before Cwmbran was a New Town, it was a powerhouse.

In the early 19th century, the Monmouthshire Canal - completed in 1794 - ran through the heart of the Eastern Valley, carrying coal, iron ore, and finished goods between the furnaces of the valleys and the docks at Newport. Along its banks, ironworks, brickworks, collieries, and tin-plate factories sprang up. Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds (GKN) - one of the largest industrial employers in all of Britain - had its roots right here in Cwmbran.

The men and women who worked these industries, who lived in the terraced rows of Pontnewydd and Croesyceiliog and Old Cwmbran, built communities with extraordinary strength of character. Communities that looked out for each other, mourned together, and remembered their dead with pride.

Many of their memorials are still here - in the cemeteries and churchyards of Torfaen. It is a privilege to care for them.

Mossfords. Here since 1821 🌿

How Long Does a Headstone Take? An Honest Guide

It's one of the first questions families ask us - and we think honesty is the best approach.

Here's a realistic timeline for a new headstone in the Cwmbran and Torfaen area:

✅ Cemetery or churchyard permission: typically 4–8 weeks, though it can vary by site.

✅ Stone design and approval: we work at your pace — there's no rush.

✅ Crafting by our skilled stonemasons: usually 6–10 weeks, depending on complexity.

✅ Installation and finishing: we handle everything, including aftercare options.

In total, from your first conversation with us to a completed memorial, most families should allow around 3–5 months.

We know that can feel like a long time when you're grieving. That's exactly why we keep every family fully informed at every step - no chasing, no surprises, just clear communication throughout.

If you'd like to understand timelines for a specific cemetery, just drop by our branch for a chat. We're always happy to talk.

The hillside above Blaenavon holds one of the most remarkable landscapes in Wales. The ironworks, the collieries, the terraced streets - all built by working families who came here and made this place theirs, generation by generation. It is why UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site: because what happened here mattered, and the evidence of it deserves to be preserved.

St Peter's Church in Blaenavon - one of the oldest in Torfaen - contains the graves of ironworkers and their families going back to the early 1800s. The memorials there speak to a community that knew hardship, and that marked the lives of its people with care and permanence, even when those lives were hard. That instinct - to remember, to mark, to honour - is one we recognise deeply in the work we do at Mossfords.

As visitor season opens across the Blaenavon World Heritage Site, it is worth taking a moment to walk quietly through St Peter's churchyard and read the stones there. Each one is a name, and every name belonged to someone who shaped this landscape.

There's something about the hills above Cwmbran that puts everything into perspective.

From the ridge of Mynydd Maen - looking south over the rooftops of Cwmbran and Pontnewydd, across the valley to Newport and the Bristol Channel beyond - the scale of what's been built here, and the beauty of what was here before, is extraordinary.

This is the landscape Mossfords has been part of since 1821. The hills, the valleys, the communities below.

Many of the families we serve at Mossfords don't live in Cwmbran themselves. They grew up here, or their parents did - but they've since moved to other parts of the UK, or further afield.

If you're a Welsh family living away from home, please know: distance is no barrier.

We can conduct your full consultation by phone, email, or video call. We handle all cemetery and churchyard permissions ourselves. We'll send you design proofs to approve before anything is carved. And we'll keep you informed at every single step.

Wherever you are, if your loved one rests in a cemetery or churchyard in the Cwmbran, Torfaen, or wider South Wales area — Mossfords is here to help 💙
